God Will Give Us Joy

Habakkuk 3:17-18

Our true story comes from a part of the bible called the Book of Habakkuk. Habakkuk loved God very much and told people things that God wanted them to know.

We begin with a man named Habakkuk. One day, Habakkuk was thinking about God, and he started to pray. Habakkuk prayed:

“Even if I don’t have any figs on my fig trees, I can have joy because God loves me.”

“Even if I don’t have any grapes on my grapevines, I can have joy because God loves me.”

“Even if no food grows in my garden, I can have joy because God loves me.”

“Even if I don’t have any animals on my farm, I can have joy because God loves me.”

Habakkuk knew that God loved him all the time, even when he didn’t have the things he wanted. And knowing that God loved him all the time meant that Habakkuk could have joy all the time.

We can have joy all the time, because God loves us too! So, when anyone asks you, “Who can have joy all the time? You can say, “I can have joy all the time!”

Bible Paraphrase: A joyful heart is good medicine. Proverbs 17:22, ESV

Text Truth: I can have joy no matter what.

Family Devotional

Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
—Habakkuk 3:17-18

In our Bible Story, Habakkuk prayed to God and told Him that even if he didn’t have any figs on his fig trees, he could have joy because God loved him. Even if he didn’t have any grapes on his grapevines, he could have joy because God loved him. Even if his garden didn’t grow any food, he could have joy because God loved him. Even if he didn’t have any animals on his farm, he could have joy because God loved him. Wow! Habakkuk had joy all the time—no matter what he had or didn’t have because he knew that God loved him. And we can have joy all the time too, because God loves you and God loves me!

A joyful heart is good medicine. —Proverbs 17:22, ESV

In our Bible story, Habakkuk had joy because, whatever happened, he knew that God loved him. So, with your family, get a piece of paper and have each family member write down their name, and have them draw a heart next their name on the paper. If you have any heart-shaped stickers, give each family member a sticker and let them place their sticker next to their name.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for loving (say each family member’s name). Knowing You love us helps us have joy all the time . . . no matter what! You’re the best, God, and we love You very much. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
