Jesus Teaches about God's Care

Matthew 6:25-34

Jesus taught people. He was a very good teacher. People followed Jesus wherever He went because they wanted to learn more about God, His Father.

One day, Jesus was teaching. He climbed up the side of a big hill and sat down. He asked His special helpers, His disciples, to gather around Him. The people who had been following Jesus gathered around Him, too.

Jesus knew some of the people worried: that means they thought a lot about things. Jesus knew it wasn’t good for the people to worry.

Jesus began to teach the people. He said, “Don't worry.” Jesus knew that some of the people thought a lot about how they would get food to eat or how they would get clothes to wear. God didn’t want people to worry about those things. Jesus knew God had a plan to take care of them.

Jesus said, “Don’t worry about what you will eat.” He looked up in the sky. Jesus said, “See the birds in the sky? They don’t worry about what they will eat. They don’t plant seeds or save food in a barn.

God makes sure they have food every day. God loves you much more than the birds. Each day, God will give you the food you need.”

Jesus looked at the grass and the flowers that grew all around them. Many of the flowers were a variety called anemone. Those flowers had beautiful colors of bright red and bright purple, the colors that a king would wear!

Jesus knew the people gathered the flowers and the grass, dried them, and put them in their oven fires for cooking their food.

So Jesus said, “Do not worry about what clothes to wear. See the plants? God helps them grow. He gives them beautiful flowers. You know how beautifully a king dresses in all his robes? Even a king doesn’t look as beautiful as these flowers do!

If God dresses the flowers and grasses, He’ll make sure you have clothes to wear. God loves You much more than the grass and plants. Each day God will give you the clothes you need."

Jesus taught that God will take care of you. So don’t worry about what you will eat. Don’t worry about what you will wear. Instead, think about God and what He wants you to do. And let God take care of what you need. Jesus doesn’t want us to worry.

Bible Paraphrase: Nothing is impossible with God. (For no word from God will ever fail. – Luke 1:37 NIV)

Text Truth: Jesus doesn’t want us to worry.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Donate Clothes

  • If your church or local charity has a food pantry or clothing drive, shop with your child for food and clothes to donate.
  • Explain that one way God helps those who don’t have food or clothes is to have people that love God give them to people in need.
  • Remind your child that Jesus doesn’t want us to worry.

God Takes Care of Me

Sing this song to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell.” For other verses, replace the word “everything” with something that God takes care of (little seeds, birds flying, fish swimming. etc.)

God takes care of me.
God takes care of me.
God takes care of everything.
And God takes care of me.

Count on God’s Care

You’ll Need: Bible, paper or writing pad, crayon or pen or pencil

  • Open the Bible to Matthew 6 and review the Bible story with your child.
  • After you review the story, make a list of things God has given you (family, friends, warm clothes in the winter, a bed, toys, etc.).
  • When you are finished with your list, count how many ways God shows care for your family.
  • Say with your child the Bible paraphrase: “Nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)

Pop Your Worries

You’ll Need: soap bubble solution, bubble wand

  • With your child, list some worries people in your family might have.
  • One by one, ask God to take each of these worries, and for each one, blow a bubble and let your child pop it.
  • Popping each bubble symbolizes that God takes care of the worry and we don't need to worry about it.
  • Say with your child the Bible paraphrase: “Nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)
