Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part, of the Bible called Matthew. Matthew was one of the special helpers of Jesus. The Bible tells us what happened soon after the wise men left Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. One night, God sent an angel to talk to Joseph in a dream. "Joseph, get up!" the angel said. "Take Jesus and Mary and go to the faraway country of Egypt. Stay there until you are told to go back. God will tell you when it is safe to come back. King Herod wants to hurt Jesus. Help keep Him safe." Even though it was the middle of the night, Joseph got up. He and Mary packed what they needed. While it was still nighttime, Joseph, Mary, and little Jesus left for Egypt with their donkey. Ka-plod, ka-plod. People in Bible times often rode donkeys when they had to travel a long way. Ka-plod, ka-plod. It was a long and dusty ride from Bethlehem to Egypt. Finally, they got to Egypt where it was s

The Bible tells us that on the night Jesus was born, some shepherds were out in the fields near the town of Bethlehem, watching their sheep. Suddenly the sky was filled with light. An angel of the Lord appeared to them! There was light shining all around the angel. At first the shepherds were afraid. They didn’t know what to think. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I have good news of great joy for you and all people. God’s Son, Jesus, has been born today in Bethlehem. He is Christ the Lord. This is how you will know Him—He is a little baby wrapped in cloths and sleeping in a manger.” The shepherds were surprised. God’s Son was born! Then the whole sky was filled with angels saying, “Glory to God in heaven and peace to those God is pleased with on earth!” Soon the angels were

The Bible tells us about a new law. That was the law made by Roman Emperor Caesar August. Emperor is another word for king. Everyone in the Roman world had to have their name on a list. All the people had to go to the town where their family was from. Mary and Joseph had to put their names on the list too. So, they traveled to a small town named Bethlehem, the town of the family of David. Joseph belonged to the family of David. Mary and Joseph were very tired. They had been traveling for several days. Mary, who was going to have a baby, probably rode on a donkey. Bible people often walked or rode on donkeys when they traveled. Ka-plod, ka-plod. Ka-plod, ka- plod. Finally, they reached Bethlehem. Now they could find a place to rest. Joseph looked for a place where they could stay. He
