Jesus Calls Matthew

Image
Matthew 9:9-13 Jesus lived in Capernaum, a fishing town by a lake called the Sea of Galilee. A man named Matthew lived near Capernaum. Matthew was a tax collector. His job was to collect money from the people to give to the king. Matthew had a booth where people came to pay their taxes, or money for the king. It was a law, so they had to give their money to Matthew. Sometimes Matthew collected more money than the king asked for. Matthew kept the extra money for himself so he could get rich. That was stealing. Some of Matthew’s tax collector friends stole money too. People called Matthew and his friends “sinners" because they stole money. One day, Jesus was walking down the road where Matthew’s booth was. Jesus saw Matthew in his booth. He walked over to Matthew. He loved Matthew and wanted Matthew to learn to love Him. Jesus wanted Matthew to stop stealing. He wanted Matthew to be one of His special helpers. So Jesus said to Matthew, “Follow Me.” Matthew knew J

Jesus Visits Zacchaeus

Luke 19:1-10. Jesus and His helpers were traveling to Jerusalem. On their way, they passed through a town called Jericho. The people in Jericho heard that Jesus was coming. Many came to see Jesus. The people moved closer together because they all wanted to see. They all waited to see Jesus. One man that wanted to see Jesus was named Zacchaeus (zak-KEE-us). He was a tax collector. He collected taxes, or money, from the people in his town. Zacchaeus was a very rich man. Sometimes he collected more money than he should. Then he would keep the extra money. Many people didn’t like Zacchaeus because he took too much money. Zacchaeus had heard many stories about Jesus and wanted to see Him. But Zacchaeus could not see Jesus. There were many tall people. And Zacchaeus was a short man. But Zacchaeus had an idea. He ran ahead of Jesus and climbed a sycamore tree where Jesus would pass by. Now Zacchaeus could see Jesus better than the other people! As Jesus came nearer, H

Jesus Helps Bartimaeus See

Luke 18:35-43; Mark 10:46-52 Bartimaeus (bar-tih-MAY-us) was blind. He could not see. But he could hear. Bartimaeus sat by the road near a town called Jericho. He called to the people that passed by. Bartimaeus had to beg because he didn’t have any money to buy food. He would sit by the road asking people to give him food. Bartimaeus heard people talking. They had exciting news. They said, “Jesus is coming! Jesus is coming!” Bartimaeus learned that Jesus and his helpers were on their way to Jerusalem. And Jesus was passing by! Bartimaeus was happy to hear about Jesus. He knew Jesus would listen if he asked for help. He called out in a loud voice, “Jesus! Son of David! Help me!” The people around Bartimaeus told him, “Be quiet." But Bartimaeus shouted even louder, “Jesus, help me!" Jesus stopped. He heard Bartimaeus asking Him for help. Jesus asked the people to bring Bartimaeus to Him. The people told Bartimaeus, “Get up! He is calling you.” Barti

Jesus Talked with a Woman at a Well

Image
John 4:1-42 Jesus and His helpers were on a long journey. They were traveling from Judea back to Galilee, where Jesus lived. On the journey, they passed through another country, called Samaria. They stopped in Samaria at a water well near a city called Sychar.  A water well is a deep hole in the ground that has water for drinking. This well was called Jacob’s Well because it once belonged to the man named Jacob, who God renamed Israel. Jesus was tired and thirsty. There was water in the well. But Jesus didn’t have a jar to get the water out of the well.  Soon, a woman came to the well to get water. She brought a jar so she could bring water home from the well. She was all by herself. Jesus asked the woman, “Will you give me a drink of water?” The woman was surprised. She said, “How can you ask me for a drink? You are from a different country. People from Your county usually don’t talk to people from my country.” Jesus told the woman, “You don't
