1 Samuel 16:6-13 Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the part of the Bible called 1 Samuel ("First Samuel"). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after Samuel. Samuel was a prophet of God. One day, God gave Samuel a special job. God said, “Go to Jesse’s house. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” Samuel went to Jesse’s house. Jesse had many sons. One by one, the sons came before Samuel. The first son looked tall and strong. Samuel thought, “This must be the one!” But God said, “No. I do not look at people the way you do. David was a shepherd. That means he took care of sheep. Every day, David watched over his sheep. He helped them find soft grass to eat and cool water to drink. He made sure they stayed safe. Paul and his friends traveled to a new place to tell people about Jesus. One day, they went down to a river where some people were gathered to pray. There was a woman there named Lydia. Lydia was listening very carefully. Paul began to tell the people about Jesus—how Jesus loves them and how He is alive. Lydia listened closely. And God helped Lydia understand and believe what Paul was saying. Lydia was so happy! She loved Jesus and wanted to follow Him. Then Lydia and her family were baptized. After that, Lydia did something kind. She invited Paul and his friends to come stay at her home. Lydia wanted to help and care for them.
