God Made Families

Genesis 3:30; 4:1-2

The Bible tells us that God made a man. His name was Adam.

God also made a woman to be a friend and helper for Adam. Her name was Eve.

Eve was Adam’s wife. There were two people in God’s world.

Adam loved Eve very much. And Eve loved Adam, too. God wanted them to have children. So, He gave them a baby. It was a boy. They named him Cain. Eve said, “I have a baby boy with God’s help.”

Adam and Eve loved their baby. The rocked him and kept him safe. Cain grew. Now there were three people in the family.

Then God gave Adam and Eve another baby. God gave them another baby boy, a brother for Cain. They named him Abel. Eve may have said, “I have another baby boy with God’s help.”

Adam and Eve loved Abel, too. They rocked him and kept him safe, just like they had with Cain. And Abel grew. Now there were four people in this family.

Adam and Eve took care of Cain and Abel. They gave them food to eat and water to drink. They taught them many things, like how to grow plants and take care of the animals.

Adam and Eve thanked God for giving them children. Cain and Abel thanked God for giving them a mommy and a daddy.

God made the first family of Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel. He planned that the first family would love and take care of each other. Our families may not be the same size as Adam and Eve’s Our families may not have a daddy, a mommy, and two boys. But God planned for our families to love and take care of each other—including us. God made our families too.

Bible Paraphrase: The LORD is God. It is he who made us. (Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasturePsalm 100:3 NIV)

Family Devotional

Read Genesis 3:20; 4:1-2. Despite the many differences in families there is a common element—God made them all. Just as He made the first family in Genesis 4, God made your family. It may not have two parents and two children like Adam and Eve’s family. But your family is special.

Thank God for your family and pray for specific needs. Then do something kind such as calling a relative you haven't talked to in a while, giving a hug, or doing something for someone.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Caring Families

As your child gets ready for bed, name some of the things you and other family members like to do to care for each other.

Recreate Your Family

You’ll Need: paper or card stock, construction paper or fabric scraps, scissors, yarn
  • Cut out a paper doll chain.
  • Using construction paper or fabric scraps for clothes, let your child make the paper doll chain look like your family.
  • Use the yarn to make hair for the paper dolls.
  • As you work, practice the memory verse.

Help Your Family

Help your preschooler plan some ways they can serve family members this week, such as picking up toys or clothes, looking for a lost item, setting the table, etc.

Tell the Story of God’s First Family

You’ll Need: dolls and/or stuffed toys

Use the dolls or toys to review the story of the first family God created.
You and your child can pretend to be Adam and Eve taking care of Cain and Abel.
Help your child think of things the first parents might have done for the boys, such as preparing meals, playing with them, and hugging them.
Guide your child in naming things your family members do to care for each other.

Thank God for Your Family

Pray, thanking God for each member of your family by name. Thank Him for one specific thing about each person. Don’t forget grandparents and aunts and uncles.
