God Made Our Senses
Genesis 1:27; 3:20; 4:1-2; Job 20:9a; 34:3; 42:5; Proverbs 20:12; Matthew 11:15
The Bible tells us that a long time ago, God made the earth and everything in it. God made the first people on earth. Adam and Eve. God made their two boys, Cain and Abel. God wanted them to enjoy the world He had created. God gave them special parts of their bodies called senses. He gave them fingers to feel, eyes to see, a nose to smell, ears to hear, and a tongue to taste with.
You are using your eyes to look at words and pictures.
What is something that feels wet? (water).
What can you hear with your ears? (bird)
What can you taste? (orange)
God made our fingers, eyes, noses, ears, and tongues. God made our senses.
God gave us fingers so we could touch. Close your eyes and touch your leg. Think about how it feels.
Open your eyes. God gave us eyes to see. Look at your hand. Think about how it looks.
God gave us noses to smell. What are some things that smell?
God gave us ears to hear. Let’s be very quiet and listen. What do you hear?
God also gave us a tongue to taste. Imagine you are tasting an orange. What does it taste like?
We feel with our hands, see with our eyes, smell with our noses, hear with our ears, and taste with our tongues.
God made our five senses to enjoy our world.

For the ear tests words as the tongue tastes food. – Job 34:3
Job, whose righteousness was attacked, had to test whose words were true—God’s or Satan’s.
In the same way, your ears have to test the words you hear. As you listen to the world, you need to determine what is true and what isn’t. How do you test what you hear?
The ultimate test you can use is the Bible. Compare what you hear in the world to what the Bible says.
Your word is truth. – John 17:17
Ask the Lord to help you act on the truth.
Explore all your child’s senses this week, focusing on one each day. If Monday is hearing day, listen to the birds singing. Continue for the other senses. Point out the different senses you use when you are in the car, at the store, playing outside, etc. Focus on how God made our senses to enjoy the world He created.
As you eat a healthy snack this week, such as an apple, have your preschooler use all five senses to describe it. Offer your child a variety of fruits to compare.
Read books with your child about the various senses. If you need book ideas, search “senses” or a specific sense at your favorite library, online source, or bookstore.
After telling the Bible story, retell it letting your preschooler use his senses. Gather: a piece of fruit, a bowl of water, a mirror, a noisemaker, and a family pet or plush animal toy. As you tell the story, stop at the appropriate time to smell, taste, look at, listen to, or feel the things you collected.
As you use your senses this week, thank God for giving them to us. Thank God that you can taste your snack, hear the birds sing,
