Together We Make Music

2 Chronicles 29:25-31

The Bible tells us that there was a king named Hezekiah [HEZ-uh-kigh-uh]. King Hezekiah lived many years after King David and King Solomon. King Hezekiah loved God very much.

King Hezekiah wanted to praise God in a special way. He thought of the ways King David had praised God years before. King David had liked music. So King Hezekiah had an idea. The people in the temple could praise God by making music together!

But first the temple needed to be cleaned and repaired. The man who was the king before Hezekiah had closed the temple. So Hezekiah had the temple opened and cleaned.

Then King Hezekiah called the priests and the Levites [LEE-vites] to the temple to worship and make music to God. They were helpers at the temple. Hezekiah asked the people of Jerusalem to come and worship God too.

The priests mad music by playing trumpets. Toot-ta-ta-toot-toot. King Hezekiah liked the way the trumpets sounded when the people made music together to praise God.

Some of the Levites made music by playing the cymbals. The loud cymbals went clang-clang-clang. King Hezekiah liked the way the cymbals sounded when the people made music together to praise God.

Other Levites made music by playing the harps. Plink-plink-plink. King Hezekiah liked the way the harps sounded when the people made music together to praise God.

Some of the people sang praises to God. “Praise God for He is good!” they sang. King David had written some of the songs they sang.

Everyone at the temple made music with their songs and instruments. They were happy to praise God with their music. We can make music together too.

Bible Paraphrase: Worship the LORD. (Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. Psalm 96:9 NIV)

Text Truth: We can make music together.

Family Devotional

He stationed the Levites in the temple of the LORD with cymbals, harps and lyres in the way prescribed by David and Gad the king’s seer and Nathan the prophet; this was commanded by the LORD through his prophets. – 2 Chronicles 29:25

You may or may not sing well or play an instrument. The quality of your music isn’t important to God. It is your attitude that matters. When music comes from your heart, in sincere praise, God is pleased. He asks you to:

Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. – Psalm 100:2

Think of a time when music caused you to experience a deepening of faith. Worship God with music as you spend time with Him. Sing one of your favorite songs to Him.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Sing Favorite Songs

When you’re doing dishes, or helping your child take a bath, sing your preschooler’s favorite songs.

Sing Songs of Worship

As you travel throughout the week, sing along to CDs or MP3s. Your child will also enjoy making up songs of worship to familiar tunes.

Singable Table Graces

There are numerous singable table graces to thank God for food before meals. Teach your preschooler one of these prayers and sing it before you eat meals or snacks. Your child will especially enjoy learning once you sang as a child.

God Our Father, Sung, to the tune “Are You Sleeping”

God our father, God our father
Once again, once again,
We would ask thy blessing,
We would ask thy blessing.
Amen, amen.

Temple Musicians

You’ll Need: homemade rhythm instruments such as an oatmeal-box drum, wooden spoons or pan lids for cymbals, or a cardboard tube for a trumpet

Pretend you are the temple musicians as you review the Bible story. Play the instruments together as you sing familiar songs about Jesus. Remind your child that making music is one way we can worship God. Then say the memory verse together or make up a song using the memory verse.

Sing a Prayer

Many worship songs can be prayers to God. Sing one of these songs as a prayer to God or sing your own prayer to God.
