Jesus Tells About Two Builders

Matthew 7:24-29; Luke 6:46-49

Our story comes from two books in the Bible. They are the book of Matthew and the book of Luke.

The Bible tells us many things. It tells us about God’s Son, Jesus. Many people would listen to Jesus tell special stories. He would tell a story about things that happened in the people’s lives. Then Jesus would tell what the story told about God. In that way, people could learn about Jesus and God.
One day, Jesus told a story about two men.

The first man was very wise. He knew that he needed a good place to build his house. He dug a deep hole so he could build his house on a big, solid, rock. Bang! Bang! ZZZZ! ZZZZ! He worked long and hard to build a nice house.

One day, a great storm came. It rained hard. The wind blew and the river water came up. Because the man’s house was built on a big, solid rock, it did not fall down.

The other man also wanted to build a house. But he was foolish. He didn’t look for a big, solid rock. Instead, he built his house on the sand. Bang! Bang! ZZZZ! ZZZZ! He worked long and hard to build a nice house.

When the big storm came, the rain came down, and the river water rose. When the water reached the house, the house fell down.

Jesus said that the man who built his house on the big, solid rock is like the one who listens to the stories Jesus tells, remembers the stories and does what they teach.

We can learn from this story Jesus told.

Bible Paraphrase: Worship the LORD. (Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. Psalm 96:9 NIV)

Text Truth: We can learn about Jesus from His stories.

Family Devotional

Read Matthew 7:24-29. Jesus tells a story about a storm that hits two houses. One was strong enough to withstand the rain because it had been built on a sturdy foundation. Jesus told this parable to challenge those who heard it.

Listen carefully to Jesus’ words.

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24).

Evaluate your foundation. If you are lacking in putting God’s Word into practice, ask the Lord to help you correct your actions.

When you put your trust in God and follow His Word, your life is built on a strong foundation. Following Jesus gives us strength to endure any storm that comes our way.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Stories about Stories

Read stories about Jesus or stories that Jesus told with your preschooler. Talk about what we learn about Jesus from each story.

Sing About the Story

Help your child remember the story Jesus told about the two builders with the song “The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock.” Use motions to make the song even more fun.

Song on YouTube

The Wise Man Built His House
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
The wise man built his house upon the rock
And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the wise man's house stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
The foolish man built his house upon the sand
And the rain came tumbling down

Oh, the rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
The rain came down
And the floods came up
And the foolish man's house went "splat!" [clap hands once]

So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ
And the blessings will come down

Oh, the blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The blessings come down
As your prayer go up
So, build your house on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Share Stories

Share your favorite Bible storybook with others. Give a storybook to your church nursery, waiting rooms, friends, or homeless shelter. Then others can also learn about Jesus from His stories.

Class at Home

Review the Bible story by playing Sunday school with your child. You can be the teacher as you show how to cup a hand by an ear to get ready to listen. Then read or talk about the story. If your child wants to be the teacher, let him or her have a turn as you show how you can be a good listener. After the story, compliment your child for listening.

Pray and Thank Jesus for Stories

Thank Jesus for specific things you learned from the stories that He told. This is also a great opportunity to show your preschooler that even grown-ups are still learning about Jesus.
