Jesus is Alive!

Luke 23:46, 50-56; 24:1-12, 35-44

Our story comes from a book in the Bible called Luke. The Bible tells us that there were some people who did not like Jesus. They did not want Jesus to tell people that He was the Son of God. So they did a very sad thing.

They had Jesus arrested and then had Him put on a cross.

Later that day, Jesus died.

Jesus’ friends were very sad. One of Jesus’ friends, named Joseph, took Jesus’ body down from the cross and wrapped it in white cloths.

Then he laid Him in a cave. A big rock was used as a door to the cave.

Some women, who were also Jesus’ friends, saw where Joseph had put Jesus’ body. They went home to get spices and perfume ready to put on Jesus’ body.

Jesus died on a Friday. The next day was Saturday. The day after that was Sunday. That was the day the women could go put the perfume and spices on Jesus’ body. The women went back to the cave.

When they got there, the women were surprised! The big rock had been rolled away from the cave. They looked inside and saw that Jesus’ body was gone!

Suddenly two angels came and stood beside the women.

“Do not be afraid. We know that you are looking for Jesus. He was here but now He is gone. He came alive again, just as He told you He would,” the angels said.

The women were very happy and ran all the way back to tell Jesus’ friends that He was alive.

“Jesus is alive!” the women shouted.

Jesus’ friends couldn’t believe it. Peter ran to the cave. He went into the cave.

Peter saw the white cloths that Jesus’ body had been wrapped in. But Jesus wasn’t there.

Later, Jesus came to the house where His friends were.

Jesus showed them that He really was alive!

They even ate dinner together.

Jesus died and is alive again!

Bible Paraphrase: "I am with you always." (…and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:20 NIV)

Text Truth: Jesus died and is alive again!

Family Devotional

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” Then they remembered his words. — Luke 24:1-8

Jesus is alive! And because of that we have new life in Him. We have the gift of eternal life because of Jesus’ death.

Praise God that you are no longer dead in your sins but alive with new life because of Jesus. What a glorious hope we have of eternal life with Him!

Activities You Can Do at Home

Share Secrets at Bedtime

As you help your child get ready for bed, tell your child that Jesus came alive again because He loves us. Take turns whispering the special secret very quietly in each other’s ears: Jesus died and is alive again!

Edible Angels

You’ll Need: angel-shaped cookie cutters, a batch of pre-made or store-bought sugar cookie dough, icing and sprinkles, cookie pan, oven, oven mittens, other kitchen items as needed

Let your child help cut out angel-shaped cookies and decorate them. As you work together, talk about the wonderful message that the two angels gave the women at the tomb. When the cookies are finished, let your child hold two angels as you repeat their message. Then enjoy some cookies and give some while telling people the angels’ message.

Treats and Good News

Make a basket full of fun treats to give to someone and tell them that Jesus is alive. You may wish to use the angel cookies and deliver the gift to someone you wrote down in Let’s Pray.

Bible Story, Sad and Happy

You’ll Need: paper plates, crayons or washable markers

On a paper plate, make a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other side. As you read the Bible story, let your child show the sad face if that part of the story is sad or the happy face if that part of the story is happy. Finish the Bible story by saying, “Jesus died and is alive again!”

Pray and Tell

You’ll Need: construction paper, safety scissors, glue or glue stick, crayons or washable markers

Cut out a large flower. Write a name on each petal of someone to tell that Jesus is alive! Pray for each of the people listed on your flower.
