Abraham and Sarah and Baby Isaac

Genesis 21:1-6

Take-Home

Our story comes from the book, or part, of the Bible called Genesis. Genesis means "the beginning."

The Bible tells us that Abraham and His wife, Sarah, lived a long time ago. They were a family. One, two. It was a small family. There were two grown-ups but no children.

Abraham and Sarah were sad because they had no children. They wanted a baby to love. They waited and waited until they were very old, even older than many grandparents, but still there was no baby. Abraham and Sarah were sad.

God knew that Abraham and Sarah were sad. He wanted them to be happy. God promised that soon they would have a baby.

So, Abraham and Sarah waited a little longer. Finally, they had a baby!

Abraham and Sarah were happy! Even after they were very old, God gave them a baby boy. Isn’t that happy news! Sometimes when we are happy, we laugh! Abraham and Sarah named the baby Isaac. Baby Isaac’s name means “he laughs.” Abraham and Sarah were happy to have a baby they could love as part of their family.

Now they were a special family. Abraham was the father. Sarah was the mother. And God had given them the special child, Isaac. Abraham and Sarah loved baby Isaac, and they were very happy.

Abraham and Sarah took good care of Isaac. Abraham taught Isaac just as God had commanded. Sarah was so happy that God had given them Isaac to love. She wanted everyone to be happy, just as she was!

God gave Abraham and Sarah baby Isaac to love. Abraham and Sarah loved baby Isaac. God wants us to love our families, too.

Bible Paraphrase: Love one another. (“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” – John 13:34 NIV)

Text Truth: God wants us to love our families.

Family Devotional

Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” — Genesis 21:5-6

Life events (or the lack of events) may challenge our desire and ability to love each other. But we still are called to love our families. This goes for the children you teach, and it continues on throughout our lives. The good news is that we have help because God is gracious to us and keeps His promises.

Because of His grace, we can be certain He is present with us in the situations that make it difficult for us to love our families. And because of His promises, we can take those challenging situations to Him—just as Abraham did. We can be honest with God. If hard questions of "Why?" and "How?" and "What do You want me to do about…?” are sincere, then God is ready to listen and respond. Ask for His help to love. Then listen and love.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Bible Rhyme

The Bible paraphrase is in the last line of the rhyme. Teach the words and actions a line at a time. Have your child repeat each line back to you.

God made me.
(Point to self.)
God made you.
(Point to someone else.)
God made my family, too!
(Hug self.)
God loves me.
(Point to self.)
God loves you.
(Point to someone.)
He said, "Love one another," too.
(Open arms wide.)

Have a Picnic

Preschoolers enjoy special family activities, so have a picnic, even if it's inside! Ask your child to help prepare the food, as a way to show love. After washing hands, show how to make a sandwich.

Surprise!

Give your child a special surprise gift, such as stickers or a homemade card, just because you love him. Help your child think of ways he can show love to others in your family such as giving a drawing or a hug.

Drawing on the Go

Keep a magnetic drawing toy in your car. As you travel, have your child draw pictures of your family and hearts. Talk about how you show love to those in your family. It's okay that young preschooler's drawings may not look exactly like people or hearts.

Happy and Sad

Make a happy and a sad face on paper plates. As you read the story, have your child hold up the plate that shows whether Abraham and Sarah are happy or sad.

Give Thanks at Mealtime

At mealtime, go around the table and share one thing you love about each family member. Then pray together, thanking God for your family.
