Jesus Taught from the Word of God

Luke 4:16-22a

Our story comes from the Bible. It is in a part, or book, of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wrote about Him so that others could know Jesus and love Jesus, too.

All week long, Jesus was busy. Every day, He talked to people about God. He told them about God’s love.

On the last day of the week, Jesus did not go out to work. It was God’s special day. It was for meeting with friends to worship God. Jesus went to a special place called a synagogue. A synagogue back in Jesus’ time was like our church building today. It was where people met to sing, pray, and learn about God’s Word, the Bible.

One day, Jesus came to the town of Nazareth. He had lived in Nazareth when He was a little boy. Some of the people remembered Him. They were excited that Jesus had come back to Nazareth.

On the last day of the week, everyone went to the synagogue. Jesus went too, just as He usually did. When all the people were there, they began to worship God. First, they prayed. The said out loud that there was only one God.

Next, it was time for an important part of the worship—when someone read aloud from God’s Word and then told what the Bible said.

On this day, Jesus was the one to read God’s Word. He stood up and a helper handed Him a scroll. A scroll was like a long piece of rolled up paper with writing on it. That’s what the Bible looked like in Jesus’ time. Jesus carefully opened the scroll and read.

Everyone listened as Jesus read from God’s Word. The words told that God was going to send someone who would help people know about God.

After He finished reading, Jesus rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the helper, and sat down.

Jesus told the people what the words He read meant. Jesus said, “I am the one I have just read about in God’s Word.” Jesus wanted the people to know that God had sent Him to help each one of them.

People in the synagogue learned from the Bible. Together we can learn from the Bible.

Bible Paraphrase: Christ is the head of the church. (For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. – Ephesians 5:23 NIV)

Family Devotional

When Jesus was done reading the from the scroll of Isaiah, He told the people:

"Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." — Luke 4:20

The people heard that the Scripture was about Jesus.

Like Jesus, you have the honor of presenting the Bible to your family; to your children.

You have the opportunity to tell them the many wonderful things about Jesus through the Bible.

Your preparation time in God's Word and prayer will give you the grace, authority, and confidence to teach your children what He wants you to teach them.

Pray that your preschooler marvels at what they hear.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Bible Phrase Rhythm

Pat your knees two times, then clap your hands. Christ is another name for Jesus. Our Bible phrase tells us that Jesus is the leader of the Church. Say the Bible phrase rhythm with your child. Pat your knees twice for every word in bold. Clap one time for each underlined word.

Christ is the head of  the church.

Bible Phrase Song

The Bible phrase song helps us remember our Bible phrase from Ephesians 5:23. Sing the words to the tune, “The Farmer in the Dell.”

Christ is the head of the church.
(Point up, then put hands together in a point.)
Christ is the head of the church.
(Point up, then put hands together in a point.)
We sing and pray to God because
(Fold hands in prayer.)
Christ is the head of the church.
(Point up, then put hands together in a point.)

Talk About Worship

Have fun comparing your worship experiences with those of Jesus' day. Jesus walked to worship. Ask your child how you get to church. Jesus read from a Bible scroll. Help your child remember what people at church read from today.

The B-I-B-L-E

Sing the song "The B-I-B-L-E" throughout the week. Singing this Song will help your child connect that we learn from the Bible.

The B-I-B-L-E, yes that's the book for me.
(Open and close hands like a book.)
I stand alone on the Word of God,
(Stomp one foot and stand straight and tall.)
The B-I-B-L-E.
(Open and close hands like a book.)

Make a Scroll

Scrolls were used in Bible times rather than books. Make a scroll by crumpling a piece of construction paper or a paper bag and then smoothing it out. Write a favorite Bible verse on it and roll it up.

Read Bible Stories

Read Bible stories to your child during the week. Talk about what you learned from the Bible story. Search together for other Bibles you have in your house.

Thank God that We Can Learn about Him

Thank God for all the things we can learn about Him from the Bible. Thank Him also for those who teach your child from the Bible.
