Jesus Healed Peter's Mother-in-Law

Matthew 4:23-25; 8:14-15

Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part, of the Bible called Matthew. Matthew was one of the special helpers of Jesus.

The Bible tells us many people came to see Jesus. They heard Him teach about God's love. If people were sick or hurt, Jesus made them well.

The news about Jesus spread all over the country. Jesus walked from town to town. Jesus taught men, women, and children about God everywhere He went. He told them how much God loved them. Some people brought friends and family members who were sick with all types of sicknesses. Some of the people were sick. Some people couldn't walk. Others couldn't see. Whatever was wrong with them, Jesus made them well.

Many people came a long way to see Jesus. Some even came from other parts of the country. Large crowds followed Him wherever He went. They knew Jesus cared for people who were sick.

One day Jesus visited a town called Capernaum. It was near a big lake called the Sea of Galilee. Capernaum was where His friend Peter lived. Peter had a wife. His wife had a mother. His wife's mother was Peter's mother-in-law.

That day, Peter's mother-in-law was very sick. She had a fever. She was so sick she could not leave her bed. Peter knew Jesus could help her.

When Jesus came into Peter's house, He saw Peter's mother-in-law lying on her bed. Jesus cared for Peter's mother-in-law.

Jesus touched the mother-in-law's hand. All of a sudden, she felt better. The fever left her!

Peter's mother-in-law got out of bed. Usually people feel weak and not very strong after being in bed sick. But Peter's mother-in-law was able to get Jesus anything He needed. She even felt well enough to help make dinner.

Peter was glad Jesus cared for his mother-in-law and made her well. Jesus cared when other people who were sick came to Him. And Jesus cares when we are sick, too.

Bible Paraphrase: [Jesus] went around doing good. (...how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Acts 10:38 NIV)

Text Truth: Jesus cares when we're sick.

Family Devotional

This lesson teaches us that Jesus healed and helped people in many ways. The Bible also encourages us to care for people.

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’"  Matthew 25:40

Romans 13 encourages us to share with God's people who are in need. Take a few moments to list people you know who are sick. Beside each name, write a way you can help. Finally, pray for each person and pray that God will give you the wisdom and time to do what you wrote to help them.

As you minister to sick people, help them know that Jesus cares for them.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Let Us Give Our thanks to God

Teach this song to your preschooler, to the tune, "Mary Had a Little Lamb."

Let us give our thanks to God,
Thanks to God, thanks to God.
Let us give our thanks to God,
For He loves us so.

Bible Rhyme

Teach your child this Bible rhyme and motions to help them remember the Bible phrase.

Jesus went around doing good.
(March in place.)
He taught His friends how to pray.
(Fold hands.)
Jesus made people feel well again.
(Reach overhead and stretch.)
He forgave them and helped them obey.
(Hold hands out in front of you, palms up.)

Make a Meal

Everyone has favorite food to eat when they are sick. As a family, make a simple meal you usually make when someone is sick. Involve your preschooler as much as possible. As you eat, talk about how Jesus cares for us when we are sick.

Help a Family

As a family, talk about how you can help a family who has a sick family member. Pick one way that involves the whole family, and then do it. You could also donate books, gift cards for meals or hotels, or craft supplies to a local hospital or charity helping families with sick children. Be sure to ask what the needs are before bringing a donation.

Stories of Doctors and Hospitals

This week, read some books about visiting the doctor or hospital. Explain that God can heal our sickness in many ways, including doctors.

Sick and Well

Act out the Bible story. Let your child get into bed and pretend to be sick. Touch his hand and help him get out of bed. Then let your child pretend to make dinner.

Thank Jesus for Good Health

Use daily activities to help your child appreciate good health. As she's playing, help her thank Jesus for legs to run and jump. While she's eating, help her thank Jesus for a tongue to taste the good food. As you point these things out, let her respond, "Thank You, Jesus."
