The People Celebrated Jesus

Matthew 21:1-11, 15-16

Our story comes from a book of the Bible called Matthew. Matthew was one of the helpers of Jesus.

The Bible tells us that Jesus and His helpers were going to the city of Jerusalem. It was time to celebrate the special time of the year called Passover.

On the way to Jerusalem, they passed by a village. Jesus said to two of His helpers, “Go to the village up ahead."

"When you get there, you will find a donkey tied up. Her colt, or young donkey will be tied up next to her. Untie the donkey and her colt. Bring them back to me. If anyone asks what you are doing, tell him the Lord needs these donkeys. The owner will say that it is all right to bring them."

Jesus’ two helpers found the donkey and her colt, just as Jesus had said.

They brought them back to Jesus. Clip, clop, clip, clop, went the donkeys as they walked along.

Jesus’ helpers took off their coats and laid them over the colt’s back. It made the donkey softer for Jesus to ride. Jesus climbed up on the back of the donkey’s colt. Clip, clop, clip, clop. Jesus rode the donkey down the road to Jerusalem. The mother donkey followed Jesus and her colt.

Many people were also going to Jerusalem for Passover. They were excited when they saw Jesus riding on the donkey. They knew He was King because of things He had done and said. The people knew Jesus was their King and that is why they praised Him.

The people praised Jesus as He rode by. They praised Jesus by putting their coats on the road to honor Jesus. Others praised Him by placing branches they had cut off the trees on the road.  Some of the people held their branches.

Some of the people went in front of Jesus. Others followed Jesus and the donkey. Some people shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” Some people shouted, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” The people holding branches waved them as they shouted praises to Jesus.

Some of the people asked, "Who is this?" The people answered, "This is Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee."

The people praised Jesus, their King, all the way to Jerusalem. We can praise Jesus, our King, too!

Bible Paraphrase: "Come and follow me," Jesus said. (“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Matthew 4:19 NIV)

Text Truth: We celebrate Jesus because He is special.

Family Devotional

“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
— Matthew 21:5;  Zechariah 9:9

Jesus indicated that He came to do His Father’s will to establish an eternal kingdom of peace and righteousness that would rule in our hearts and lives.

Jesus is the perfect ruler of that Kingdom. He is the leader who will never leave the citizens dissatisfied. But we must surrender and accept the grace and forgiveness of Jesus the King. When we invite Him to become our Savior and King of our hearts and lives, we can live in His kingdom forever.

Think about when you first acknowledged Jesus as your King and how He has changed you.

Then praise Jesus, your King.

Activities You Can Do at Home

Make a Praise Palm Branch

You’ll Need: green construction paper, a glue stick, crayons or washable markers, safety scissors

Cut the construction paper into rectangles about six inches wide and two inches tall.
On each rectangle, write one way to praise Jesus, our King.
While you work, talk about the Bible story and how the people praised Jesus.
Glue the rectangles onto another piece of paper in the shape of a palm branch.

Praise Him, All Ye Little Children

Sing praise songs when you and your child are doing household chores. Sing old favorites such as “Praise Him, All Ye Little Children.” Then let your preschooler sing songs from Sunday school. Clap together as you make up a song of praise.

YouTube video of the song, Praise Him, All Ye Little Children

Praise Him, praise Him, all ye little children,
God is love, God is love;
Praise Him, praise Him, all ye little children,
God is love, God is love.

Love Him, love Him, all ye little children,
God is love, God is love;
Love Him, love Him, all ye little children,
God is love, God is love.

Thank Him, thank Him, all ye little children,
God is love, God is love;
Thank Him, thank Him, all ye little children,
God is love, God is love.

A Praise Parade

Invite friends over and have a praise parade. Before the parade, talk about different ways that they can praise Jesus, their King, during the parade. Take turns leading your parade inside and outside.

Retell the Bible Story and Praise Our King

Use fabric scraps, toy people, and a toy donkey to retell the Bible story. Together praise Jesus, our King, at the appropriate times in the story.

Pray and Praise

Use your prayer time to praise Jesus for who He is and what He does. Before you pray, ask questions and talk about who Jesus is (our fiend, helper, Savior) and what He does (loves and forgives us, helps and cares for us) that we can thank and praise Him for. Then pray together.
