God Kept His Promise to Abraham and Sarah

Genesis 12

Our true story comes from the book, or part of the Bible called Genesis. Genesis means “the beginning.”

Our story is about a man name Abraham and his wife Sarah. One night, God took Abraham outside and told him to look up at the stars. He promised Abraham that one day he would have a family with as many people in it as there were stars in the sky! Have you ever tried to count the stars? That’s a LOT. And that was a very big promise.

Abraham and Sarah were ready to have a baby. So, they waited and waited and waited for God to keep His promise, but still there was no baby.

“No problem,” Abraham thought. “God keeps His promises. We’ll just wait some more.” And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. Abraham and Sarah didn’t just wait for hours or days. They waited for years until they were both very old. Then one day, God sent three men with a message. They told Abraham, “God wants you to know that Sarah’s going to have a baby one year from now.”

Sarah heard what the men said, and she thought it was funny. So, she laughed!

Why did she laugh? Because by this time, Sarah was very old. How could she have a baby? But nothing is too hard for God.

And one year later Sarah had a baby boy!

They named him Isaac. The name Isaac means “laughter!”

God kept His promise to Abraham, and He will keep His promise to you, too. God keeps His promises even if we have to wait.

Bible Paraphrase: Trust the LORD with all your heart. – Proverbs 3:5, NCV

Text Truth: God keeps His promises even if we have to wait.

Family Devotional

"I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing." — Genesis 12:2

Waiting can be hard. Abraham and Sarah knew this. God promised they would have a family. And they waited a very long time. But God gave to Abraham and Sarah baby Isaac! They learned that God keeps His promises even if we have to wait.

Trust the LORD with all your heart. — Proverbs 3:5

Think of something you need God to help you with. It can be anything. Write it down. Ask your family members to each think of something they need God to help them with. Write each thing down.

Pray with your family. Thank God for each member of your family. Thank God for hearing us when we talk to Him. Say the name of each family member and read from your list their thing they need God to help them with. Ask God to help you all wait, like Abraham and Sarah, for God to keep His promise. Remind your family that God keeps his promise even if we have to wait.
