Moses and the Sea

Exodus 13:17-18; 14

Our true Bible story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

Our story tells us about a man named Moses.

Moses went to Egypt to save God’s people, the Israelites.

They had been kept there by a very mean king. A king in Egypt is called Pharaoh. God promised to save His people from Pharaoh.

So, Moses came to speak to Pharaoh. And Moses and Pharaoh met a lot and talked a lot.

Finally, Pharaoh agreed to let the people go.

Later, after saying he would let God’s people go, Pharaoh changed his mind. He came running after them on his chariot with all his army.

Pharaoh’s army chased the Israelites all the way to the sea. What were the Israelites going to do? They had the sea on one side. And Pharaoh’s army quickly moving in on the other side. They couldn't go one way or the other. They looked left. They looked right.

The Israelites were so scared, but God promised to save them. And God keeps His promises.

So, God told Moses to hold out his walking stick, and suddenly, the water started to move and make a path for God’s people to walk on!

God parted the sea, so His people could walk right through it! They were saved!

God moved an entire sea so Moses could lead His people through. God promised to save His people from the mean king Pharaoh and He did!

God keeps His promises. And God's promises are awesome!

Bible Paraphrase: Trust the LORD with all your heart. – Proverbs 3:5, NCV

Text Truth: God’s promises are awesome!

Family Devotional

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left Exodus 14:21-22

Talk with your family about the Bible story. Ask them to pretend they are the Israelites following Moses on dry ground after God parted the waters. Ask your family what they might see in the water on each side. Perhaps they would see a lot of fish!

Remind your family that God had promised Moses He would always be with him. And God kept His promise. God was with Moses at the water and He parted it so Moses could walk on dry land.

We can trust God with all our heart, because He loves us and always keeps His promises.

Trust the LORD with all your heart Proverbs 3:5, NCV

Pray with your family. Thank God for each member of your family by name. Ask God to help each one, by name, trust God with all their heart. After your prayer, remind your family that God keeps His promises and that God's promises are awesome!
