God Was with Hagar and Her Son

Genesis 21:14-20

Our true story comes from the book, or part, of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

Our Bible story is about a woman named Hagar and her son.

They were in a desert. A desert is hot and sandy, and it is hard to find water there.

Hagar and her son had walked in the desert for a long time and they were tired, hot and thirsty. Think about how tired and hot and thirsty you would be walking in a desert. That’s how Hagar and her son felt.

But they had no food or water. What would you have done if you were tired, hot and thirsty and you had no food or water? Hagar and her son began to cry.

Hagar thought they were all alone in the desert and that no one could hear them crying. But God heard them crying. God sent an angel to tell Hagar that He heard her son crying, and the angel helped her see a well full of water! They had water to drink!

That day, Hagar learned that she didn’t have to worry because God’s got it. God was with them the whole time. He was listening and ready to give them what they needed.

God hears us and can give us what we need, too. No matter where we are or what’s happening, God’s got it!

Bible Paraphrase: God is with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9, NLT

Text Truth: God hears me and gives me what I need.

Family Devotional

"God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there."

 Genesis 21:17

Our Bible story told about a mother named Hagar and her son named Ishmael. They were in the desert, the were hot, they were tired, and they really needed water. But God heard the son crying and showed Hagar where there was water.

God is with us and hears us, too. God has the power to give us what we need. That’s why we say, "God's got it!" God can hear us no matter where we are because God is with us wherever we go.

God is with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:9

With your family, make a list of things you need. Not the things you want, but the things you need. For example: A need is like family or water. A want is like a toy or piece of candy.

Pray with your family. Thank God for each member of your family. Give each family member the opportunity to pray if they want. Thank God for always being with you all and hearing you when you talk to Him. Thank God for loving you and having the power to give you what you need. Read the list your family made. Ask God to teach you all to know the difference between what you need and what you want.
