Moses and the Water

Exodus 17:1-7

Our true Bible story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

God had been with Moses since he was a little baby.

God chose Moses to be a great leader.

Moses led God’s people out of Egypt. And they were on their way to their new home.

But the people had followed Moses for a long time and they were beginning to whine and complain.

The people had been walking and walking and walking in the desert. Deserts are hot and there is not a lot of water there. God’s people were getting very, very hot and very, very thirsty.

So, God’s people started to complain. They said, “We’re hot! We’re thirsty! Why did you bring us here?”

Moses said to the people, “Stop whining and complaining. Do you not remember that God’s got it?”

But God’s people had forgotten. They thought God didn’t care about them anymore.

Do you think God still cared about the people? Yes, He did! And God was with the people, just like God is always with us. Do you think God could hear them and give them what they needed? Of course, He could! Do you think God had a plan and that it was perfect? Yes! God’s got it!

Moses also knew that God’s got it. So, he went out in front of the people and did what God told him to do.

Moses hit a rock with his stick. And can you guess what happened when he did?

Water came pouring out of the rock! Everyone could drink all the water they needed!

Just like God’s people learned, we can know, too: Wherever we are and whatever is happening, God’s got it!

Bible Paraphrase: God is with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9, NLT

Text Truth: God’s got it.

Family Devotional

The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
— Exodus 17:5-7

God's people complained to Moses about water. They wanted it. And they wanted Moses to give it to them. Moses talked to God about it and God was with Moses. God heard Moses and told him what to do to get water. The plan sounded a little strange, but Moses trusted that God’s plan was perfect. Moses followed God’s plan, hit a rock with his stick, and out came water! God took care of Moses, and He will take care of you too. God’s got it!

God is with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:9

With your family, make a list of things you need God's help with. Maybe someone needs help to be sweet to their baby brother or sister. Or maybe you need help with someone in your family who is sick. Whatever you need help with, write it down.

Pray with your family. Thank God for always being with you, hearing you, and giving you what you need. Acknowledge that God's plan is perfect and that God's got it, whatever it is. Ask God to help your family with the things you need. Read your list of things you need. Acknowledge that you trust God and believe He has the power to help you with anything.
