Three Friends Knew God Was with Them

Daniel 3:10-28

Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called Daniel. Daniel was a man that loved God very much and lived in a land called Babylon.

Our story starts with a king. His name was King Nebuchadnezzar. That’s a long name!

King Nebuchadnezzar thought he was the best king in the world. And he wanted everyone to know it! So, he had the people make a giant golden statue that looked just like him. He put the statue in the middle of the city where everyone could see it. It was 90 feet tall. That is big! If it were a building, it would be 9 stories tall.

After King Nebuchadnezzar had his statue built, he gathered all the people around it and told them every time they heard the music play, they must bow down and worship the statue. If anyone did not bow down, the king said he would throw them into a big fire in a furnace!

So, each day, the music played. And each day, all the people bowed down to the golden statue. Everyone except three men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They wouldn’t bow down to the statue.

The three men were friends of God. They loved God and knew they should never bow down to anything or anyone but God.

Do you think the king was mad? Yes, he was! He was so mad that he ordered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to be thrown into the fire.

But Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not scared! They knew that God was always with them and that God’s got it.

So, the king had them thrown into the fire. Everyone thought it was the end for the three friends, but then something happened!

When the king looked into the fire, he didn’t see three friends. He saw one, two, three, FOUR! Four friends were walking around together!

Someone else was in the fire! Whoever it was, he looked like an angel sent by God to protect Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. All the people were amazed.

King Nebuchadnezzar was so surprised, he ordered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to come out of the fire.

When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked out of the fire, nothing was wrong with them. They weren’t hurt! Not even a hair on their heads had been burned! How was that possible? Because God was with them!

King Nebuchadnezzar saw how God kept Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego safe, and he praised the one true God. He knew that God was with them and He was the only one they should worship.

The three friends knew for certain that no matter what happens, God’s got it. And like the three friends, we can also know that no matter where we go or what happens, God’s got it!

Bible Paraphrase: God is with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9, NLT

Text Truth: God is always with me.

Family Devotional

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” — Daniel 3:16-18

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego loved God and they knew it would be wrong to bow down and worship the statue the king had made. The king became so mad that he threw them in fire!. But God was with them wherever they wenteven in the fire, He kept them safe and showed the king who has the real power. That is why we say that God's got it. No matter what happens in your life, God has the power to take care of it.

God is with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:9

With your family, make a list of places you go. It can be anywhere! It can be somewhere you go a lot, or it can be somewhere you know but have never been.

Pray with your family. Thank God for each member of your family. Give each family member the opportunity to pray if they want. Acknowledge that God is with you all wherever you go. Read your family's list of places and thank God for being with you at each place. Ask that you all remember that no matter where you go, God is always with you.
