Nehemiah Was Thankful for Help

Nehemiah 1-6

Our true story comes from the book, or part, of the Bible called Nehemiah (pronounced “nee-ah-MY-ah”).

Nehemiah lived a long time ago. He loved God very much. Nehemiah did a very important job for the king.

One day, Nehemiah had visitors from the city of Jerusalem, his home.

They told Nehemiah the walls of Jerusalem were broken down.

When Nehemiah learned about Jerusalem, he became very sad.

Can you guess what Nehemiah decided to do? He decided to fix the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah told the king what he wanted to do. And the king helped Nehemiah! The king gave him help to rebuild the wall.

With the king's help, Nehemiah traveled all the way from Susa to Jerusalem.

But when Nehemiah got there, he saw that the wall was very big and very broken! Do you think Nehemiah could fix it all on his own? There was no way! Nehemiah needed help. And lots of it.

Lots of people came to help Nehemiah.

Each group took a different section of the wall. One group worked on the tower. Another group worked on the gates. And even more people worked on other sections of the wall.

They worked and worked and worked and worked and worked until one day, the wall was finished! Nehemiah was so thankful to all the people who helped him build the wall.

Nehemiah was thankful. He was thankful for the king who helped him get to Jerusalem. And he was thankful for all the people who helped him rebuild the wall. Just like Nehemiah, we can say “thank you” to all the people that help us.

Bible Paraphrase: Always give thanks to God. – Ephesians 5:20, NCV

Text Truth: I am thankful for people who help me.

Family Devotional

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.

They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work. — Nehemiah 2:17-18

Nehemiah had a big job to do. He needed to repair the broken wall of Jerusalem that kept his city safe, but he couldn’t do it alone. He needed help—A LOT of help—so he asked people to help him. And they sure did. Nehemiah was thankful for all of the people who helped him.

Always give thanks to God. — Ephesians 5:20

Who are you thankful for? With your family, make a list of the people who help you. They could be members of your family, friends, neighbors, or even people you don't even know.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge that God is good to you and that you want to say thank-you for the people who help you. Read your list of people. Ask God to always give you the courage to ask for help when you need it.
