The Disciples Needed Jesus
Matthew 8:23-27
Our true story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part, of the Bible called Matthew. Matthew was one of the special helpers of Jesus.
Jesus was traveling with His disciples. A disciple is a student. Jesus was their teacher. Jesus was also their friend.
Jesus and His disciples were out in a boat.
Suddenly it started to rain. It rained harder and harder. And the wind began to blow. And the boat began to rock. The boat leaned to one side and then it leaned to the other side.
And then there were flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder. The disciples became so afraid! They didn’t know what to do. But then they knew: They needed Jesus! They didn’t know what He could do, but they knew they could go to Him for anything. So, they did.
Jesus was asleep in the boat. The disciples said, “Jesus, wake up! Save us from the storm. We are SO afraid!”
Jesus told them, “Don’t be afraid.” And then Jesus told the wind and the waves to STOP! And because Jesus is God’s Son, the wind and the waves DID stop!
The disciples learned that nothing is too big for Jesus. He can calm a storm. He can do ANYTHING.
When we are afraid, we can ask Jesus for help because NOTHING is too big for Him. The disciples needed Jesus. You need Jesus. We ALL need Jesus.

Family Devotional
Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” — Matthew 8:23-25
Jesus and His disciples were in the boat. A bad storm came. It was raining and the wind was blowing and the boat was rocking back and forth. The disciples were SO scared! Jesus told the rain and wind to stop, and they did! Only Jesus can do that!
Other things can make us feel scared, too. For example, being alone in the dark or going to the doctor or talking to a new person. That’s why we need Jesus. Jesus can help us when we’re scared.

When we pray, we can talk to God about the things that scare us, and we can tell Him we need Jesus when we're scared. With your family, make a list of things that scare you.
Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for giving us Jesus to be our friend when we are scared. Read through your list. In turn, ask God to help each family member (call them by name) when he/she is scared of (read their item from the list). Ask God to help you all remember that because Jesus is with you, and because He can do anything, you don't have to be scared.
