Jesus Loves Mary and Martha

Luke 10:38-42

Our true story comes from the Bible. It is in the part, or book, of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too.

Jesus went to visit two of His friends. They were sisters and their names were Mary and Martha.

Mary and Martha were very excited that their friend Jesus was coming for a visit.

Jesus sat down, and Mary sat with Him.

But Martha did not sit down. She had way too much to do. She was so busy! First, she was busy cleaning. Next, she was busy cooking dinner. Then she was busy setting the table.

Finally, dinner was ready and on the table, dessert was made, the house was clean. And everything looked amazing! And Martha had done it all by herself while her sister, Mary, was still sitting with Jesus.

Martha looked at Mary and became very upset. She went to Jesus and said, “Jesus, I’m doing all the work. Make Mary help me!”

But Jesus said, “Martha, I came to spend time with you and Mary, but you’ve been too busy to spend time with me.” It was true. Martha was so busy that she missed spending time with her friend Jesus. And that was why He had come to her house in the first place—just to spend time with her.

Jesus likes it when we spend time with Him. And there are lots of ways to spend time with Jesus. We can talk to Jesus and pray. We can go to church. We can sing songs to Jesus. We can tell Jesus thank You for loving us and always being with us. Jesus wants to spend time with you because He loves you. And when we spend time with Jesus, it shows Him that we love Him, too!

Bible Paraphrase: How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. – Ephesians 3:18, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus wants to spend time with me.

Family Devotional

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:41-42

Jesus went to visit His friends Mary and Martha. But when He got there, Martha was too busy to spend time with Jesus. And she got upset with her sister, Mary, when Mary stopped to spend time with Jesus.

But Jesus told Martha that Mary had made a good choice to spend time with Him. Jesus wants all of us to spend time with Him because He loves us.

With your family, make a list of some of your favorite places. You can include a playground, your bedroom, or even your favorite place to eat. Your favorite places can be anywhere! As you write, remember that Jesus can spend time with you anywhere. But the important thing is that you spend time with Him.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for sending Jesus to be your friend forever and to love you so much. Ask God for help to remember how much Jesus loves you and that He wants to spend time with you, no matter where you are or what you are doing. Read through your list. As you do, acknowledge that you can spend time with Jesus at each place.
