God Made You to be Like Him

Genesis 1:26; Acts 17:24; Psalm 46:1; Proverbs 2:6

Our true story is found in the parts, or books, of the Bible called Genesis, Acts, Psalms, and Proverbs.

Do you like to create? Do you like to make things? God likes to create. And He is really good at it. God made everything. The world, the sky, the clouds, the trees, the flowers, and oceans. God made eagles, kangaroos, little ladybugs and giant whales!

And of all the amazing and wonderful things God made, His most amazing creation is you! God made you to be like Him. Which means you are more special than anything else He made.

Do you like to paint? Or draw? Or color? Do you like to build things with blocks? Or bake cupcakes? Or put on a show with dancing and singing? Have you seen a tree put on a show? Or seen a ladybug build with blocks? Can the ocean bake cupcakes? Only you can do those things because God made you to be creative like Him.

Also, God is helpful. And God made you to be helpful too. You can pick up our toys. You can hug our friends when they are sad. You can help set the table. But have you ever seen an elephant set the table? No. We can be helpers because God made us to be helpful like Him.

You are smart, too. Do you like to read? Could you imagine a sheep trying to read a book? God made you to be smart like Him. So, you can ask questions and learn things. You can count. You can read. You can learn all about the world God made.

God made you to be creative and helpful and smart. Because God made you to be like Him.

Bible Paraphrase: I am fearfully and wonderfully made. – Psalm 139:14, NIV

Text Truth: I am made in God's image.

Family Devotional

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” – Genesis 1:26

Our Bible story is about how God made us in His image, which means He made us in His likeness. God is creative, so we are creative. God is smart, so we are smart. God is helpful, so we are helpful.

And of course we are fearfully and wonderfully made, like our Bible verse says we are, because we were made in God’s image.

I am fearfully and wonderfully made. – Psalm 139:14, NIV

We learned that we are creative because God is creative. We are smart because God is smart. We are helpful because God is helpful. We are all of these things because God made us in His image.

With your family, make three lists of things. Have each family member say a creative thing they do, a smart thing they do, and a helpful thing they do. Creative can be that you like drawing pictures. Smart can be you like counting and learning to read. Helpful can be you are great at helping your family members. Whatever the three things are, write them down for each family member.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge that God made you in His image, that God made you to be like Him. Thank God for making you creative like Him (read your list of creative things). Thank God for making you smart like Him (read your list of smart things). Thank God for making you helpful like Him (read your list of helpful things). Recognize that you feel special knowing that God made you in His image.
