God Helped Aaron and Hur

Exodus 17:8-13

Our true Bible story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

Our story is about two helpers named Aaron and Hur. Moses was the leader of God's people, the Israelites. And Aaron and Hur were the helpers of Moses.

One day, some mean people, called Amalekites, came to attack God’s people. Moses knew that God would help his army, so he said, "I’m going to stand on this hill and hold up the staff of God."

The Israelites were winning against the mean people. Yay, God!

But then Moses started to get tired. He couldn’t hold up the staff anymore. And the mean people began to win the battle!

Moses needed to raise his hands. When he did, God's people began to win, again!

But when Moses got tired and dropped his hands, the mean people began to win.

Moses needed some help. Aaron and Hur came to the rescue! They had Moses sit down. And then they helped Moses raise the staff over his head. And God's people were winning, again!

Aaron and Hur stayed with Moses and helped him hold up his arms for the whole battle, and guess who won. Yes! God’s people, the Israelites. Moses didn’t get tired, because he had help from Aaron and Hur. God helped Aaron and Hur be big helpers. He can help you be a big helper, too!

Bible Paraphrase: We have the LORD our God to help us.  2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Text Truth: God helps me help others.

Family Devotional

As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset Exodus 17:11-12

In our Bible story, Moses held up his arms. But he got tired and he needed help to hold his arms up. That is when Moses' brother Aaron and his friend Hur got beside him and helped to hold them up. Sometimes God helps us help other people do big things . . . and that’s a big thing! God helps us do big things.

We have the LORD our God to help us 2 Chronicles 32:8

With your family, make a list of people you can help. Write down the name of each family member. And from each member, receive and write down the name of one person that they can help.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge that God can help you all to help others. Thank God for each member of your family. Ask God to help each family member be a helper. Read through your list and note the family member and the person they can help. Acknowledge that you all want to help others do big things.
