God Helped David Be Brave

1 Samuel 17:1-50

Our true story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part, of the Bible called First Samuel (1 Samuel). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after a man named Samuel.

Our story begins with a big, mean giant. His name was Goliath of Gath. Goliath was very big. And Goliath was very mean. Do you know who he wanted to fight? God’s army, the Israelites.

Every day at the Valley of Elah, Goliath would tease the Israelites saying, “Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, who’s gonna fight me?” But the Israelites were too scared. No one was brave enough to fight the giant.

That changed when a boy named David came from Bethlehem to bring food to his older brothers.

David was there when Goliath came out to tease them again. “Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, who’s gonna fight me?” he said.

David thought surely one of the Israelite soldiers would fight Goliath, but they were too afraid. So, David told the king, “I’ll do it!”

Everyone was surprised. David was not a soldier. How could he fight a big, mean giant? But David knew that God would help him be brave, and he decided to fight the giant Goliath. They tried to put armor on David, but it was way too heavy. But David didn’t need their armor. He knew that God would protect him. David took a sling and five small stones, and he went to face the giant.

David took out his sling and said, “Goliath, you may come at me with all your big weapons, but God is with me!”

Then David put one stone in the sling. He raised his sling in the air. He twirled it in the air, and he slung the stone!

Down went the giant! David did it. He won! Everyone was so happy! Way to go, David!

God helped David be brave and fight a giant. God can help us, too. God helps us do big things!

Family Devotional

So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
— 1 Samuel 17:50

Our Bible story was about someone who was super-duper tall! His name was Goliath and he was very, very tall.

There was someone else in our Bible story that wasn’t so tall. He was a young boy. His name was David, and he was much smaller than Goliath.

God helped David do something very brave in our story. God helped David battle Goliath all by himself! And David won! God helped David do a very big thing. God will help you do big things, too!

We have the LORD our God to help us 2 Chronicles 32:8

With your family, make a list of things you need to do that you are a little afraid to do. Maybe it's sleeping alone in your bed, going to the dentist, or talking to a new friend. For each family member, right down the brave thing they need to do.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge that it knowing God is alway with you makes you feel safe. Ask God to help you remember that He is with you so you can be brave and do big things. Thank God for helping you do brave things like (read through your list of things you need to do). Acknowledge that God is the greatest. Express your love to Him.
