Jesus Gives You the Power to Be Gentle

Mark 5:25-34

Our true story comes from the Bible. It is in the part, or book, of the Bible called Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him so they would love Him, too.

There was a woman who had been sick for a very long time. None of the doctors could make her better.

One day, the sick woman heard that Jesus was coming to her town. She had heard people say that Jesus had the power to do amazing things. She wondered if He had the power to make her all better.

She hurried to find Jesus. When she saw Jesus, there was a huge crowd of people around Him. She thought to herself, “If I can just touch His clothes, Jesus’ power can make me better and I won’t be sick anymore.”

The woman squeezed her way through all the people so she could get close enough to Jesus to touch His clothes.

Then, without even asking, the woman reached out and touched the bottom of Jesus’ clothes.

Just like that, the woman was all better. She wasn’t sick anymore! The woman was SO HAPPY!

But that’s not the end of the story. When the woman touched Jesus’ clothes, Jesus felt His power go out and make the woman better. Jesus knew what had happened, but He asked anyway. Jesus asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

What was the woman going to say? Was she in trouble? She was afraid. She didn’t know what Jesus would say or do. Instead of asking Him to heal her, she just reached out and touched His clothes.

The woman went to Jesus and bowed down at His feet. She said, “It was me. I am the one who touched you.”

Do you think Jesus said mean words, or do you think He said gentle words?

Yes! Jesus said gentle words! Jesus loved the woman, and one way He showed His love was by being gentle. Jesus looked at the woman and said, “Go in peace and be well. You don’t have to be sick anymore.”

Jesus was so loving and gentle when He talked to the woman. And when Jesus is our friend, He will give us the power to be gentle to people, too. Jesus really does give us the power to do everything!

Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” — Mark 5:33-34

Our Bible story is about someone who is very gentle. Jesus! Jesus is gentle! When the sick woman touched Jesus’ clothes to get well, He didn’t get mad or embarrass her with mean words. No way! Jesus is gentle, so He used gentle words. He said, "Go in peace and be well."

When we follow Jesus, He is our friend forever, and He gives us the power to be gentle too. Jesus gives us the power to do everything!

I can do everything by the power of Christ. – Philippians 4:13, NIrV

With your family, make a list of ways you can be gentle. It can be saying kind words, touching a baby softly, not throwing things in the house, petting a dog or cat softly—there are all kinds of ways you can be gentle.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for sending Jesus to show you what it looks like to be gentle. Thank God that Jesus wants to be your friend forever and give you the power to be gentle. Ask God to help you do gentle things like . . . (read the list). Thank God for His love. Acknowledge to God your love for Him.
