The Bible Teaches How to Live

Matthew 7:24-27

Our true story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Matthew. Matthew was one of the helpers of Jesus.

Jesus told a story one day when He was teaching people about God. This story that Jesus told is about houses. But Jesus told this story to teach us a lesson about how to live.

In this story, one man built his house on the sand.

The other man built his house on the rock. Both of these houses looked great until it started to rain.

The rain began to fall harder and harder and harder. Finally, the rain stopped!

And what happened to the house built on the sand? All that water washed the sand away, so the house fell down

And guess what happened to the house built on the rock. The house stood strong! The water couldn’t wash the rock away.

So which man made the wise choice: the man who built his house on the sand or the man who built his house on the rock? That’s right! The man who built his house on the rock!

Jesus told us this story because He wants everyone to know how important it is to make wise choices. When we make wise choices, we are like the man who built his house on the rock.

We can stand strong. What teaches us how to make wise choices? The Bible! God gave us the Bible to teach us how to live and make wise choices! That’s why the Bible is better than gold!

Family Devotional

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24

Jesus told a story about a man who built a house. Was it wise for the man to build his house on rock or on sand? Yes! It was wise for the man to build his house on rock. Sand will wash away when it rains and make your house fall down, but rock is hard and strong. The rain won’t wash it away.

Jesus told this story so we would know it’s wise to do what God says. God made us, so He knows the best way for us to live.

God made you! And since God made you, He knows the best way for you to live. When we live God’s way, it is like a wise man building a house on rock.

But what teaches us how God wants us to live? The Bible! The Bible teaches us how to live! That is another thing that makes the Bible better than gold.

Your teachings are worth more to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver. – Psalm 119:72, NCV

With your family, make a list of the things God wants you to do. They can be things like to love one another, to share, to be kind, to obey your parents, to say nice words, to tell the truth, to help one another—there are all kinds of things the Bible teaches us so we know how God wants us to live.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for all the people who wrote the words in the Bible. Thank God that you have the Bible to teach you how He wants you to live. Acknowledge that you want to make wise choices and live the life He made you to live. Ask God to help you do things like (read through your list). Most importantly, ask God to help you love people the way Jesus loves you.
