God Helped King Hezekiah Be Brave

2 Chronicles 32:1-23

Our true story comes from the part, or book, of the Bible called Second Chronicles (2 Chronicles). It is the second of two books in the Bible called Chronicles. The word "chronicle" means "written history."

A man named Hezekiah [HEZ-uh-kigh-uh] was the king of Judah. Hezekiah was a brave king, because he knew God was the one true God and the MOST powerful. King Hezekiah’s job was to take care of God’s people.

One day another king came along named Sennacherib [sen-AK-er-ib]. And Sennacherib was a very mean king. The mean king and his army were on their way to fight God’s people.

But King Hezekiah was ready to lead and take care of God’s people. He gave everyone jobs to get ready for the mean army. He had them fix the walls around the city of Jerusalem.

And King Hezekiah had them get the water ready and gather the supplies.

Then King Hezekiah brought all the people together. King Hezekiah told them “Be courageous, do not be afraid because the Lord our God will help us fight the battle.”

When the people heard King Hezekiah talk about God’s power, it made all of them feel brave too. The king prayed and asked God to help them fight the mean army.

And guess what happened. God sent an angel to help them! The angel stopped the mean king's army. And when the mean king and his army saw just how strong and powerful the one true God really is, they went back home.

God saved King Hezekiah and His people. God took care of them. We can be brave because God is powerful and He takes care of us, too. God can help you be brave.

Bible Paraphrase: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the LORD your God goes with you. – Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: God is powerful so I can be brave.

Family Devotional

So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them on every side. Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the Lord and valuable gifts for Hezekiah king of Judah. From then on he was highly regarded by all the nations. – 2 Chronicles 32:22-23

Our Bible story was about something AMAZING! What makes it SO amazing is that it really happened. God is so powerful that He sent an angel to help protect King Hezekiah from an entire army! Hezekiah was brave because he trusted in God’s power. God can help us be brave, too, when we trust in HIS power.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the LORD your God goes with you– Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

With your family, make a list of things only God has the power to do. It could be things like: make the world, make people, calm a storm, help Daniel in the lions’ den, know everything, send angels to help King Hezekiah—only God has the power to do things like that!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge to God that He is SO powerful. Only God can (read through your list). Acknowledge to Him that trusting He is powerful and always with you can help you be brave. Ask God to help you never forget how amazing He is and that He is what helps you be brave. Acknowledge your love for Him.
