God Helped Miriam Be Brave

Exodus 1:22–2:10

Our true Bible story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

Our story is about a big sister named Miriam. Miriam had a mom, and she had a baby brother named Moses.

One day, a very mean king named Pharaoh decided he wanted to get rid of all the baby boys in the land.

Miriam’s mom had to make a plan to keep baby Moses safe. Her mom put Moses in a basket. And then she placed the basket with baby Moses inside in the tall grass by the river. She told Miriam to watch over him.

Miriam had to be so brave! Miriam hid in the tall grass and watched over her baby brother.

Just then a princess came by the water. Do you know what she found? Yes! She found baby Moses in the basket!

Miriam knew she needed to be brave and help her baby brother. She knew God was with her, so she was could be brave. Miriam stood up and went to talk to the princess.

Miriam said, "Hello, princess. I know someone that could help you take care of the baby you just found. Do you want me to go get her?" And the princess said, "Yes!" so Miriam went and got her mommy!

And her mom was able to take care of baby Moses. All because God helped Miriam be brave!

God helped Miriam be brave so that her baby brother, Moses, would be safe and taken care of. And God can help you be brave, too! God can help you be brave so you can do big things.

Bible Paraphrase: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the LORD your God goes with you. – Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: God helps me do big jobs so I can be brave.

Family Devotional

Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

“Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.” – Exodus 2:1-10

Our Bible story was about a girl named Miriam. She had a really BIG job to do. Her big job was watching her baby brother, Moses. Miriam had to be very brave to do this big job. And God helped Miriam be brave.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the LORD your God goes with you– Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

With your family, make a list of jobs you think are really BIG. Think of the biggest jobs you can think of. Maybe cleaning your entire bedroom by yourself is a really big job. Or what if you had to grow all the food you eat in a garden or you had to fly an airplane? All of those are BIG jobs.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for Miriam’s story. Acknowledge that Miriam was so brave and trusted God to help her do a really big job. Acknowledge that you want to be brave and trust God to help you do big jobs, too! Acknowledge that no job is too big for God to help you with. They can be big jobs like (read through your list), and God can help you do it. Thank God for helping you. Acknowledge to God your love for Him.
