Wise Men Saw Jesus

Matthew 2:1-2, 9-11

Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part, of the Bible called Matthew. Matthew was one of the special helpers of Jesus.

Our Bible story is about a star. But not just any star—this star was very special. The special star that God made was different than all the other stars. It was very, very, VERY special. And God made it to point to someone very, very, VERY important.

One night, far away, some wise men saw the special star God made in the sky, and they knew they should follow it. The wise men followed and followed and followed the special star.

The star stopped over a house. So the wise men stopped and went to the house. God used the special star to show the wise men where to find Jesus!

When they saw Him, they knew He was the one God sent to show how much He loves everyone. The wise men bowed down and worshiped Jesus and gave Him their very best gifts.

The wise men celebrated that God gave us Jesus. We know God loves us because God gave us Jesus!

Bible Paraphrase: God has given a son to us. – Isaiah 9:6, NCV

Text Truth: The wise men came to see God's Son.

Family Devotional

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. — Matthew 2:1-2, 9-11

In our Bible story, God made a special star for the wise men to follow. They followed the star all the way to Jesus. When they found Jesus, they knew He was special, so they worshipped Him and gave Him gifts.

We know Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son. God gave us Jesus to be our friend forever. That’s how we know God loves us.

God has given a son to us. – Isaiah 9:6, NCV

With your family, read through Psalm 136. Reflect on how great God is, and how He has been good to you and has shown His presence and power in your life.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.

to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.

to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
His love endures forever.
and brought Israel out from among them
His love endures forever.
with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
His love endures forever.

to him who divided the Red Sea asunder
His love endures forever.
and brought Israel through the midst of it,
His love endures forever.
but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
His love endures forever.

to him who led his people through the wilderness;
His love endures forever.

to him who struck down great kings,
His love endures forever.
and killed mighty kings—
His love endures forever.
Sihon king of the Amorites
His love endures forever.
and Og king of Bashan—
His love endures forever.
and gave their land as an inheritance,
His love endures forever.
an inheritance to his servant Israel.
His love endures forever.

He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever.
and freed us from our enemies.
His love endures forever.
He gives food to every creature.
His love endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.
— Psalm 136
