Jesus Loves the Unloved Woman

John 8:2-11

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus.

Our true story begins with a woman. This woman was very sad. She was sad because she didn’t have any friends. She’d made a lot of bad choices and now no one wanted to be her friend.

What if you had no friends to play with at the park? What if you had no friends to sit with you while you have a snack? What if you had no one to play cars with? Not having any friends would be so sad.

One day, Jesus was teaching a bunch of people.

Suddenly, some men who didn’t like the woman brought her to Jesus and said, "Jesus, this woman has done bad things! She deserves to be punished!"

Do you think Jesus loved her and wanted to be her friend? Yes! Jesus did love her and wanted to be her friend. Instead of punishing her, Jesus asked the men, "Have you ever done bad things? Have you ever made bad choices? Step forward if you’re perfect and have never done bad things or done anything wrong."

Can you guess what happened? No one stepped forward because none of them were perfect.

Jesus told the woman that He would be her friend. He told her that He loved her no matter what and that she should stop making bad choices.

Will Jesus be our friend even when we don’t have anyone to play with? Will Jesus love you when you need to finish your snack or play with your cars on your own? Of course! Will Jesus love us no matter what? Yes! Jesus will always love us. Jesus wants to be our friend forever. Jesus loves everyone!

Bible Paraphrase: Love each other as I have loved you. – John 15:12, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus is our friend even when no one else is.

Family Devotional

Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
– John 8:10-11 NIV

Smiling at people is one of the easiest ways to be a good friend. But the woman in our story did not have a lot of people smiling at her. In fact, there were a lot of angry people frowning at her.

But Jesus was different. Jesus was her friend and smiled at her, even when no one else did. Why was Jesus her friend? Because Jesus loves everyone! And He wants us to love everyone, too.

Love each other as I have loved you. – John 15:12 NIV

With your family, make a list of ways you can be a good friend to people when no one else is. There are so many ways! As you think of one, write it down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge to God that Jesus is such a very good friend, and that Jesus is a friend to everyone, even when no one else is. Ask God to help you look for ways to be a good friend like Jesus, especially to people who don't have any friends. Ask God to help you do things like... (read through your list). Acknowledge to God that you do want to love people the way Jesus loves you. Thank God for His love. And acknowledge to God your love for Him.
