Jesus Loves the Woman at the Well

John 4:1-30

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus.

Our story starts with a well. A long time ago, people would go to a well to get water. They didn’t have sinks or refrigerators or water bottles. If someone was thirsty, they had to walk ALL the way from their house to the well just to get a drink!

Jesus was thirsty. He'd been walking and walking and walking a long, long way and needed a drink of water. But when Jesus got the well, He didn’t have a jar to put any water in.

How is He going to get a drink? Then He looked up and saw a woman with a jar. The woman looked at Jesus and she knew they were from different towns. Jesus asked the woman, "Will you give me a drink?"

The woman knew people from her town weren’t friends with the people from His town. So she said, "Why are you asking me for a drink?"

Do you think where she was from mattered to Jesus? No, of course not! No matter where you live, Jesus wants to be your friend, and He loves you very much.

Let's pretend that Jesus has a train. What if Jesus called, "All aboard!"? Who would get on the train? Do you think people who live where it’s really, really cold—are they invited on the train? Yes! What about people who live where it’s really, really hot? Are they invited on Jesus’ train? Yes! What about all the people who live in a super tall building? Are they invited on Jesus’ train? Yes! What about people who live in a small house or building? Are they invited on the train? Yes!

No matter where you live, Jesus wants to be your friend forever and He loves you. Everyone is invited on Jesus’ train. Jesus loves everyone!

Bible Paraphrase: Love each other as I have loved you. – John 15:12, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus loves everyone.

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John—although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”
— John 4:1-7

Our Bible story today was about a woman who went to a well with her bucket to get water. Who did she see at the well? She saw Jesus! She was surprised when Jesus started talking to her because their families were not friends. But Jesus was different. Jesus loves everyone.

Love each other as I have loved you John 15:12 NIV

With your family, make a list of places. They can be anywhere in the whole wide world! They can be places you’ve been to or places you’ve heard about or places you hope to go to one day. They can be anywhere!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for sending Jesus to love everyone. Acknowledge that no matter where you live or what you look like, Jesus loves you. Agree that you can live in (read your family's list) and Jesus loves you. Ask God to help you love everyone the way Jesus loves everyone. Thank God for His love. Acknowledge to God your love for Him.
