Andrew and Peter Followed Jesus

Matthew 4:18-22; Luke 5:1-11

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Matthew. Matthew was one of the special helpers of Jesus. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too.

Our story begins with two fishermen named Peter and Andrew. Instead of using a fishing pole, Peter and Andrew used a big net to catch fish.

Peter and Andrew were fishing when Jesus came walking by! They had seen Jesus do amazing things. They knew He was a really special leader.

Jesus said to Peter and Andrew, "Come, follow me! We will look for people instead of fish."

Jesus, the most special leader of all time, wanted the fisherman to come with HIM? Right away, Peter and Andrew left their nets behind and followed Jesus.

Then Jesus saw two more fishermen, James and John, in a boat. James and John were fishing with their dad and Jesus said, "Come, follow me!" Right away, they got out of their boat and followed Jesus because they knew He was a really special leader.

These fishermen—Peter, Andrew, James, and John—became some of Jesus’ best friends called the disciples. And Jesus wants us to follow Him, too! Jesus, God’s Son, wants us to follow Him! Who can we follow? We can follow Jesus!

Bible Paraphrase: "Come and follow me," Jesus said. – Matthew 4:19, NIrV

Text Truth: Jesus says, “Follow Me.”

Family Devotional

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
– Matthew 4:18-22

Our Bible story was about four guys who followed Jesus. Their names were Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Jesus walked up to them and said, "Follow me," and they did! Are the guys in the story the only people who can follow Jesus? No. Everyone can follow Jesus!

"Come and follow me," Jesus said. – Matthew 4:19, NIrV

For Peter, Andrew, James, and John, following Jesus meant they could follow and watch Jesus and listen to Him because He was right there in front of them.

For us, following Jesus means doing what He says—things like forgiving people and being kind, sharing, and helping others. With your family, make a list of things Jesus has told us to do so we will know how to follow Him.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge to God that you want to follow Jesus. And that since you cannot see Jesus, you acknowledge that it is important to read the Bible and pray so you will know what Jesus does. Agree that Jesus is great about doing things like (read through your list). Ask God to help you follow Jesus and do those things, too. Thank God for His love. And acknowledge to God your love for Him.
