The Disciples Followed Jesus

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

Our true story comes from parts of the Bible called Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Those are the names of four people who loved Jesus and told others about Jesus so they could love and follow Him, too.

Jesus had twelve special friends. They followed Jesus and did what He did. They were called the disciples. Their names were Peter, Andrew, James, John, the other James, Matthew, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Judas, Thaddeus, and Simon.

Peter and Andrew were brothers. And so were James and John. And all four of them were fishermen.

Matthew used to be a tax collector.

And Judas was in charge of the group’s money.

There was Simon and the other James who was younger than James the fisherman.

And then Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, and Thaddeus.

Do you know the most important thing they did? When Jesus said "Follow me," they did it! They became the disciples, and Jesus was their leader. Everywhere Jesus went, the disciples went.

The disciples followed Jesus and saw Him do so many amazing things! They saw Him make sick people better.

They saw Him feed people who were hungry.

They saw Jesus be kind and loving to everyone.

They watched Him. They followed Him. And when Jesus went away, the disciples did what Jesus did. And we can do that, too.

Just like Jesus’ friends, the disciples, we can follow Jesus and do what He did, too! Who can you follow? You can follow Jesus!

Bible Paraphrase: "Come and follow me," Jesus said. – Matthew 4:19, NIrV

Text Truth: I can follow Jesus.

Family Devotional

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
– Luke 6:12-16 NIV

Our Bible story was about twelve men called the disciples. Jesus told all of the men to follow Him. And they did! They became Jesus’ closest friends and they followed Jesus everywhere He went.

Are the twelve disciples the only people who can follow Jesus? No. Everyone can follow Jesus!

"Come and follow me," Jesus said. – Matthew 4:19, NIrV

Jesus asked twelve men to follow Him, and they became His closest friends, the disciples. Jesus wants us to follow Him, too. With your family, make a list of the names of your family members. Because you all can follow Jesus, too.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God that your family (read through your list) can hear about how much Jesus loves them. Thank God that you all get to hear that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for him.
