Joseph Gets a Coat and Goes to Egypt

Our true story is found in the Bible. Some of it is found in a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.” Some of our true story is found a part of the Bible called Jeremiah. Jeremiah loved God and told people many things that God wanted them to know.

Our true story is all about a plan. Did you know that God has a plan for you? It’s true! God has a plan for each one of us, and He had a plan for a young man named Joseph. 


Now, Joseph had brothers. Do you know how many brothers Joseph had? He had ELEVEN brothers. Let's count to eleven: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11! Do you have eleven brothers? No, I didn’t think so!


Well, one day, Joseph’s father gave him a special gift. It was a coat! A beautiful coat. When the brothers saw Joseph had a special coat and they didn’t, how do you think they felt?


Do you think his brothers were happy about his coat? 


Do you think his brothers felt mad? 


Yes, they were mad that Joseph had a special coat and they didn’t. 


So, Joseph's brothers took his coat and threw him in a hole in the ground. That was not good. But you know what? Joseph knew that God loved him, and he knew that God was always with him so he could trust God’s plan.


Just then, his brothers showed up and pulled Joseph out of the hole. The brothers sent Joseph with some people going to Egypt. And they took him really, really far away. Things were not going well for Joseph, but he knew that God loved him, and he knew that God was always with him. So, he could trust God’s plan.


God loved Joseph and had a plan for him. In fact, there is a LOT more of Joseph’s story to tell. And God loves us and has a plan for you and me. God has a plan for ALL of us!

Family Devotional

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

Our Bible story, today, was about a guy named Joseph. It didn’t matter if he was getting a special coat, being thrown in a big hole, or being sent far away by his brothers, Joseph kept trusting that God had a plan for him. God has a plan for you. And God has a plan for each of us.

"For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORDJeremiah 29:11, NLT

Have you ever thought about what you want to be when you grow up? It’s good to make plans, but we need to remember that God has a plan for us, too. With your family, make a list of what you want to be when you are older.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God for yourself and each of your family members. Thank God for the way He made you all with special thoughts and abilities. Read through your family's list: "(family member name) wants to be a (what they listed)." Repeat for each family member. Ask God that as you all grow, you will dream big, work hard, and always trust that He loves each of you and has a plan for you, no matter what happens. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for Him.
