Aaron Helps Moses
Exodus 17:8-13
Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.
Our story is about a man who was very thankful God gave him a brother. Do you have a brother or a sister? Well, this man was thankful because when he needed it most, his brother was there to help.
The man’s name was Moses. And Moses had a brother name Aaron. Moses and Aaron were part of God’s army, called the Israelites. One day, the Israelites were attacked by some mean people, called the Amalekites. But the Israelites were God’s army, and Moses knew that God would help them!
Earlier, God had given Moses a staff—like a big stick—to help Moses lead the people. So, during the battle, Moses stood up on a big rock and held up God’s staff. Moses held up God’s staff, and the Israelites started winning the battle! “Hooray!”
But then Moses’ arms were getting tired! When Moses put his arms down, God’s army started LOSING! “Oh No!”
But when Moses held his arms up, the Israelites were winning! “Hooray!”
So, Moses couldn’t put his arms down! Moses had to hold his arms up for a REALLY long time. And they got SO tired. Moses needed help!
So, his brother Aaron and his friend, Hur, came to help. Aaron and Hur brought a rock over for Moses to sit on. Then they stood on either side of Moses. And they held up his arms so that God’s staff would not come down.
And guess what? God’s army won! Hooray! Moses was VERY thankful God gave him family like Aaron and his friend, Hur, to help him. God gives us family to help us, too, like our grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, brothers, and sisters. God is good!
Bible Paraphrase: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. — Psalm 107:1, NIV
Text Truth: I can thank God for family who help me.
Family Devotional
As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. — Exodus 17:11-12
Our Bible story was about a man named Moses who had to keep his arms up high. What happened to Moses’ arms? They got tired. Who helped Moses hold his arms up high? Moses’ brother, Aaron, helped him. I’m sure Moses was very thankful to have family to help him.
It’s nice when family helps us. It’s also nice when we help our family. And we can thank God for family who help us, because God is good.
Give thanks to the LORD for he is good. —Psalm 107:1, NIV
With your family, each of you write down the name of a family member who help you. It can be Mom or Dad, Grandpa or Grandma, brother or sister, aunt or uncle—anyone you think of as family. Also, write down each family member's name with their chosen person who helps them.
Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, acknowledge that family is such a special gift that God has given to you. Thank God for the way family helps you. "[Family member's name] wants to thank You for the way [helper family member] helps them. (Repeat with each name on the list.)" Ask God to help you all be helpers to your family. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for Him.
