Wise Men

Matthew 2:1-2, 9-11

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. The word gospel means “good news!”

We’ve been talking a lot about the true story of Christmas. There was a baby born. His name is Jesus! Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son. But the story isn’t over yet!

After Jesus was born, God put something very special in the sky. God put a special star in the sky, and far, far away there were some wise men who saw it.

They knew the star meant something special. They knew God had put the star there to help them find Jesus.

The wise men were so excited! “We’ve got to follow that star,” they said. So, they did! And the star led the wise men right to Jesus.

When the wise men saw Jesus, they knew He was very, VERY special. They bowed down and worshipped Jesus. Then, they gave Jesus presents to show that they knew Jesus was special.

The wise men knew Jesus is special, and now we do, too! Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son. And we can remember how special Jesus is every day, not just at Christmas.

Bible Paraphrase: God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. — John 3:16, GNT

Text Truth: The wise men come to see God's Son.

Family Devotional

When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Matthew 2:10-11

Our Bible story was about some wise men who wanted to see Jesus and worship Him. God put a special star in the sky that helped the wise men find Jesus. The wise men followed the star until it stopped over Jesus. When the wise men saw Jesus, they bowed down and gave Him gifts to show Him how special He is. And why is Jesus special? Jesus is God’s Son!

God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. —John 3:16, GNT

If you have Christmas cookie cutters, grab one. And if you have a cookie cutter shaped like a star, even better! Because that shape also reminds us of the special star that the wise men saw in the sky and follow the star to Jesus so they could worship Him and give Him gifts. They knew that Jesus is special because Jesus is God's Son.

Bring the cookie cutter to your family gathering. Pass the cookie cutter around your group. And as each family member holds the cookie cutter, have them say, "I love You, Jesus."

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God for loving (name each member of your family) so much that He gave you Jesus to be your friend forever. Thank God that you get to spend time with your family learning about God and how much God loves you. Ask God to help each member of your family to always know how much God loves them and that they will choose to follow Jesus. Acknowledge that Jesus truly is the best gift ever. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for Him.
