Mary and Martha

Luke 10:38-42

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin at a house where two sisters lived. Their names were Mary and Martha.

Mary and Martha were friends with Jesus. One day, they heard Jesus was coming to visit them at their house. They were SO excited. Do you like to have friends over at your house? What do you like to play? Do you like to color with your friends? Do you like to eat snacks with your friends? Do you like to play outside with your friends? It’s so great to spend time with friends!

As soon as Jesus got to Mary and Martha’s house, Mary sat right down at his feet. Mary wanted to hear everything Jesus had to say. Her friend, Jesus, was here, at HER house, and she didn’t want to miss anything!

But Martha, well, she had things to do. Martha was cooking. She wanted there to be yummy food for her guest. And she was also cleaning. Martha was working so hard trying to make everything perfect because she loved Jesus, so much!

Finally, she went to Jesus and said, “Make my sister help me. I’m doing all the work!”

But do you know what Jesus said? Jesus told Martha that spending time with Him is the best thing to do. Martha didn’t need to be worried about the cooking and cleaning. Jesus just wanted Martha to spend time with Him.

That’s the kind of friend Jesus is. He doesn’t need everything to be just right. He loves us, no matter what, and He wants to spend time with you! Do you think we should talk to Jesus? Me, too. Should we dance and sing songs to Him? Yes. Should we take walks and thank Him for all the things He’s made? Absolutely! Because Jesus loves spending time with us and wants to be our friend forever! Jesus loves you, and He wants to spend time with you!

Bible Paraphrase: A friend loves at all times. — Proverbs 17:17, NIrV

Text Truth: Jesus loves me and wants to spend time with me.

Family Devotional

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” —Luke 10:41-42

Our Bible story was about how Jesus wants to spend time with us. Jesus loves us, and He likes it when we talk to Him, read our Bibles, sing songs to Him, and even dance with joy! Spending time with Jesus is one way we can show Him that we love Him.

A friend loves at all times. —Proverbs 17:17, NIrV

Mary spent time with Jesus in her house. We can spend time with Jesus anywhere, because He always wants to spend time with us. With your family, make a list of your favorite places to spend time with Jesus. It can be your bedroom, your yard, a park, your car . . . ANYWHERE!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, tell God how amazing it feels knowing that Jesus loves you and wants to spend time with you. Tell God you know that Jesus really is the best friend you could ever have. And thank God that you can spend time with Jesus anywhere, like... (read through your family's list). Ask God to help you always remember that wherever you are, you can stop and spend time with Jesus. Thank God for His love and tell God that you love Him, too. Close your prayer, "In Jesus' name, amen."
