Breakfast on the Beach

John 21:1-14

Our true story is found in at part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

We begin at a breakfast that happened not long after Jesus came back. Do you remember why we celebrate Easter? It started out sad. Jesus died and was put in a tomb.

But did Jesus stay there? No! Jesus came back, just like He said He would! It was such good news. Jesus is alive, and one of the things He wanted to do was spend time with His friends.

Jesus' friends were fishing in a boat early in the morning...

...when all of the sudden, they saw someone standing on the shore. Do you know who they saw? Who promised to come back? Yes! It was Jesus.

His friends were so excited to see Him. In fact, Peter, one of Jesus’ friends on the boat, was SO excited that he jumped in the water to swim to Jesus.

And when they got to the shore, Jesus was cooking breakfast. Do you think they had pancakes? Or cereal? No, Jesus was making them fish for breakfast.

SO, they all sat and had breakfast with their best friend, Jesus! Jesus is alive. He loved them SO much and wanted to show them that He would always be their friend, forever and ever.

Guess what? Jesus loves YOU so much, and He wants to be YOUR friend too, forever and ever!

Bible Paraphrase: How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. —Ephesians 3:18, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus wants to be our friend forever.

Family Devotional

Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
—John 21:12-14

Our Bible story was about how Jesus made breakfast for His friends, the disciples, on the beach. Jesus wanted His friends to know that He is alive and wants to be their friend forever. Jesus loves all of His friends, more than we can even imagine! That’s why our Bible verse says:

How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. —Ephesians 3:18, NIV

Jesus made breakfast for His friends. So, with your family, make a list of your favorite breakfast foods.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, thank God for giving you Jesus to be the best friend ever. Thank God for the Bible and all of the true stories that teach you how great a friend Jesus is. "We learned that Jesus made fish and bread for breakfast for His friends. We like to eat (read your family's list) for breakfast." Ask God to help each member of your family to follow Jesus so He can be their friend forever, too. Thank God for His love and tell God that you love Him. Close your prayer, "In Jesus' name, amen."
