Peter Walks on Water

Matthew 14:22-33

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin with a very special person named Jesus. Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son.

While Jesus was here on Earth, He did LOTS of things to show us how much God loves us . . .

. . . how God hears us when we pray . . .

. . . how God is always with us, and that we can trust God. Our story is about a time when Jesus showed His good friend, Peter, that he can trust God. It begins with a boat on the water. Jesus’ friends, the disciples, were in this boat out on the water.

All of the sudden, they saw something they had never seen before. They saw a person WALKING ON WATER!

Who can walk on the water? Well, the person got closer . . . and closer . . . and closer. The disciples were so scared! And when the person got closer, He said, "It’s me! Don’t be afraid!"

IT WAS JESUS! Jesus was walking on WATER!

Right away, Peter said, "Jesus, if it’s You, tell me to walk to You on the water." And Jesus said, "Come!" So that’s what Peter did. Peter stepped out of the boat.

He looked at Jesus. And guess what happened? Peter started walking on the water, too!

But Peter stopped looking at Jesus and looked around at the wind. He got really scared and started to sink in the water.

But Jesus reached out and caught Peter, so he wouldn’t sink. Then, they got back in the boat together. Peter was safe with Jesus.

Jesus showed Peter and the disciples that we can always trust God, even when scary things happen. That means you can trust God!

Bible Paraphrase: Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Proverbs 3:5, NIVI

Text Truth: Jesus shows us we can trust God.

Family Devotional

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

“Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
—Matthew 14:28-31

Our Bible story was about a man named Peter. He made a splash when he walked to Jesus on water. Jesus told Peter to walk to Him to show Peter that he can trust God. But when Peter stopped trusting, he started sinking! The Bible verse we’re learning will help us remember to trust God, no matter what.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIVI

With your family, make a list of our favorite shoes. It can be running shoes, ballet shoes, rainboots, flip flops, or sparkly shoes—whatever shoes you want. You can even say that barefoot or "no shoes" are your favorite shoes!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to show us that we can trust You. Jesus did so many amazing things that only He can do to show us that You sent Him and You have the power to do anything. Help us remember that no matter where we walk in our (name the shoes listed) shoes, we can trust You with all our hearts. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
