Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego

Daniel 3:1-28

Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called Daniel. Daniel was a man that loved God very much and lived in a land called Babylon.

We begin with a king named King Nebuchadnezzar. Now, King Nebuchadnezzar thought he was the very best king there ever was, and he wanted everyone to know it!

One day, the king had a giant idea. King Nebuchadnezzar made a huge golden statue . . . of HIMSELF!

But that’s not all. After the statue was made, King Nebuchadnezzar told ALL of the people to gather around, and he said, “Every time you hear the special music play, I want you to bow down to this statue.”

But here is the really bad part. The king also said, “If you don’t bow down to the statue, I’m going to throw you . . . into the fire!” And the king was serious.

So, each day, the special music played, and everyone in the crowd bowed down to the statue. Everyone but three people.

Their names were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They were friends with God, and they knew that they should never bow down to anyone but the one true God.

This made King Nebuchadnezzar SO mad that he ordered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego thrown into the fire!

It was a very scary time, but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego TRUSTED that God would always be with them . . . even in the fire.

Well, after King Nebuchadnezzar had them thrown into the fire, everyone was very worried about them. Things did not look good at all! But then, something amazing happened! When the people looked into the fire, they didn’t see one person. They didn’t see two people. They didn’t see three people. They saw FOUR people! Someone else was in the fire with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego!

God had sent an angel to be in the fire with them! God protected Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! It was AH-MAZING! King Nebuchadnezzar was so surprised that he told Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to come out of the fire.

And that’s what they did. When they came out, they weren’t hurt at all! King Nebuchadnezzar was SO amazed that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had trusted God and that God had saved them!

What a great story! God is amazing! God was always with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, even in the fire. And you can trust that God will always be with you, too! I can trust God, and you can trust God.

Bible Paraphrase: Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Proverbs 3:5, NIVI

Text Truth: God is always with me.

Family Devotional

Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.”
—Daniel 3:28

Our Bible story was about three guys who trusted that God was always with them, and it helped them "press play" and do the right thing. We’ll learn a new Bible verse that will help us trust God so we can press play and do the right thing.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIVI

When we trust God with all our heart, we can be brave and do the right thing just like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. With your family, make a list of places you go. It can be your grandparents’ house, your favorite place to eat, dance lessons, preschool, the store . . . anywhere in the world!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for always being with us. Thank You for being with us when we go to . . . (read the list your family made). We know we can trust You with all our hearts because You love us so much. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
