Daniel and the Lions

Daniel 6:1-23

Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called Daniel. Daniel was a man that loved God very much and lived in a land called Babylon.

We begin with Daniel. Daniel loved God and prayed to Him every day. Daniel worked for King Darius. King Darius liked Daniel, and they were friends.

But this made some other guys jealous and grumpy. These grumpy guys wanted to get Daniel in trouble so the king wouldn’t like him anymore.

So, they made a tricky plan. They tricked the king into making a law that no one could pray to anyone but HIM. The law said that everyone had to pray to the king. And if they prayed to anyone else, they would be thrown into a den of hungry lions.

What was Daniel going to do? If he prayed to God like he did every day, he could be thrown to the lions. What do you think? Do you think Daniel stopped praying to God?

NOOOO! Daniel did NOT stop praying to God. Daniel knew God was more powerful than anything and that God wanted him to pray. So, he kept praying to God every day.

The mean grumpy guys saw Daniel and went to tell the king that Daniel was praying to God and not the king! The new law said Daniel had to be thrown to the LIONS!

The king had been tricked. He was not happy! He didn’t want to throw his friend Daniel in with the lions! But that’s what the law said. The king looked at Daniel and said, “I'm sorry, Daniel. I hope your God protects you!”

So, Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den. And he was in the lions’ den, all night long.

The next morning, the king ran to the den and called, “Daniel! Did your God protect you from the lions?”

Guess what happened? Daniel was okay! God is SO powerful! He protected Daniel from the lions. was God more powerful than the king? Yes! Was God more powerful than hungry lions? Yes! God is SO powerful! God protected Daniel, and He has the power to protect us, too.

Bible Paraphrase: Great is our LORD and mighty in power. —Psalm 147:5, NIV

Text Truth: God’s power can protect me.

Family Devotional

At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
—Daniel 6:1-19-22

Our Bible story was about how God’s power protected Daniel from some hungry lions. It all started when some grumpy guys did not want King Darius and Daniel to be friends. They tricked the king into making a law that wouldn’t let Daniel pray to God. And if he did pray to God, he would get thrown into a lions’ den. Yikes!

Did Daniel stop praying to God? No way! Daniel loved God and prayed to Him like he always had. What happened when the grumpy guys threw Daniel in with the lions? God protected Daniel! King Darius was so happy that his friend Daniel was safe. Lions are really strong, but they’re not powerful like God.

Great is our LORD and mighty in power. —Psalm 147:5, NIV

With your family, make a list of places you go. God is so powerful that He was with Daniel, even in the lion's den. That means that no matter where we go, God is so powerful that He can be with us, too!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Thank You for helping us learn how powerful You are. Wow! You are SO powerful! Your power can give us what we need. Your power can help us make the right choice. And only You have the power to be with us everywhere we go, just like you were with Daniel. Thank You for being with us when we go to (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
