Moses and the Water

Exodus 17:1-7

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

God’s people, the Israelites, were led by a man named Moses.

And the Israelites all lived in the desert. In the desert, it can get really hot, and there was LOTS and LOTS of sand! But do you know what there was NOT a lot of? Water.

There wasn’t much water, and God’s people got thirsty. Now when you or I get thirsty, there are lots of places we can get water. But the Israelites did not have ANY water, anywhere. God’s people started whining and complaining because they were thirsty and didn’t have any water.

Moses knew the people needed water, but it was wrong to whine and complain about it. So, he talked to God. Moses told God that the people felt like God wasn’t helping them. But we know that God is always with us and has the power to help.

Do you think God helped the thirsty people in the desert? Yes! God told Moses to go to a big rock, and God told Moses to go to hit that rock with his staff.

Can you guess what happened when Moses struck the rock with his staff?

Water came out of the rock! God is SO powerful. Only God could do that.

Only God could make WATER come out of a rock! That’s how powerful God is! The people drank the water and knew that God was there and had the power to help them. So, the next time you need something, remember to talk to God about it. God has the power to help you.

Bible Paraphrase: Great is our LORD and mighty in power. —Psalm 147:5, NIV

Text Truth: God’s power can give me what I need.

Family Devotional

The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
—Exodus 17:5-6

Our Bible story was about whose power? God’s power! God’s power gave Moses and the people what they needed. Do you remember what Moses and the people needed? They needed water to drink. And how did God give them water? God told Moses to hit a rock. Moses did what God said, and water came from the rock!

Great is our LORD and mighty in power. —Psalm 147:5, NIV

With your family, make a list of things you need. It can be water, sleep, food, clothes, a place to live, family, friends . . . whatever you need.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You know everything. That means You know we need things like (read the list your family made). We believe You have the power to give us what we need. Thank You for already giving us Jesus to be our friend forever. We really need Jesus! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
