Deborah

Judges 4 and 5

Our true story comes from a part called the Book of Judges. A judge is someone who tells people what the law says.

We begin with a woman named Deborah. Deborah was the leader of all God’s people. She was their judge.

Every day, Deborah would stand under a tree. The people would come to her with their big questions and ask her what to do. Deborah knew God was with her. She trusted God to help her be wise and tell the people the right thing to do.

When God is with you, He helps you be wise and do the right thing. We make choices all the time! Like when you and your friend both want to play with the same toy. You can be wise and remember that God wants us to love others by sharing!

Or when your brother knocks over your blocks. You can be wise and use kind words instead of yelling at him.

Or when you see someone get hurt. You can be wise and remember that God wants us to help people.

God was with Deborah and helped her be wise. God is always with you. He will help you be wise and do the right thing, too.

Bible Paraphrase: We have the Lord our God to help us. 2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Text Truth: God is with me so I can be wise.

Family Devotional

Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time. She held court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided.
--Judges 4:4-5

Our Bible story was about how people would go to Deborah when they had hard questions. They had very important questions to ask her. Deborah had a very important job. She would listen to people then tell them the wise thing to do. Deborah was able to do this because she knew God was always with her, helping her be wise.

We have the Lord our God to help us. —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Deborah needed help knowing the wise things to say and do. She knew God was always with her, helping her be wise. So, with your family, make a list of things you need help with. We all need help.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Thank You for the Bible. It is full of so many stories about people You have helped, like Deborah. You were always with her and helped her be a wise leader. We believe You are always with us and will help us, too. Please help [family member name] with [what they listed], and [family member name] with [what they listed] . . . (continue with each family member). You are the best, God, and we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
