Rahab and the Spies

Joshua 2:1-22; 6:22-25

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Joshua. Joshua was a great leader of God’s people, with God’s help.

We begin with an army. God’s army.  And they were led by a man named Joshua.

Joshua knew God wanted his army to go to battle with Jericho, so he sent two sneaky spies to check it out.

The spies went into Jericho to check things out. But there were soldiers looking for the spies. They had to hide out, and they needed help.

Thankfully, a woman named Rahab came to the rescue.

Hiding spies took a lot of courage because so many soldiers in the city were looking for them. And if the soldiers knew Rahab was hiding the spies, she would be in BIG trouble! But Rahab knew that these men were friends of God. She had heard about God and knew that He could do amazing things. That gave her courage.

So, Rahab helped the spies get out of the city. Yay!

The spies told Rahab to hang a red rope outside her window, and when God’s army came back to the city, they would make sure Rahab and her family were safe.

Some time later, Joshua and God’s army came to battle the city of Jericho. They saw the red rope, and they remembered Rahab. The army made sure Rahab and her family stayed safe.

God was with Rahab all along. And God is always with you, too!

Bible Paraphrase: We have the Lord our God to help us. 2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Text Truth: God is with me so I can be courageous.

Family Devotional

The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.”
—Joshua 2:2-5

Our Bible story was about how Rahab had courage because she had heard of the amazing things God had done. She had the courage to do the right thing and hide the spies. When God is with us, we can have the courage to do the right thing, too. And guess what! God is always with us!

We have the Lord our God to help us. —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Knowing about the amazing things God has done gave Rahab the courage to do the right thing and help the spies. So, with your family, make a list of ways you can have courage and help others, too.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You are SO amazing! Only You have the power to always be with us. Knowing that You are always with us gives us the courage to help others and do things like (read the list your family made). We want everyone to know how much You love them. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
