David and Goliath

1 Samuel 17:1-50

Our true story comes from the Bible. It is found in a part of the Bible called First Samuel (1 Samuel). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after a man named Samuel.

Our true story starts with a Big. Mean. GIANT! His name was Goliath!

Can you guess who Goliath wanted to do mean things to? God’s people, the Israelites! Every day, Goliath would tease the Israelites. Saying, “Nah, nah, nah, nah! Who’s going to challenge me?”

But the Israelites were too scared. No one was brave enough to challenge the giant. That is, until a boy named David came along. David brought food from home to his older brothers.

David was there when the giant came out to tease them again. And David thought surely one of the Israelite soldiers would challenge Goliath, but they were all afraid of him.

So, David said, “I’ll do it!” Everyone was SO surprised. They were surprised because David was NOT a soldier. How could he challenge the giant?

But David knew that God would help him be strong and courageous. So, he challenged the giant, Goliath.

They tried to put armor on David. But guess what happened? The armor was too big and heavy! But it’s okay that the armor didn’t fit. David knew God would protect him and help him. David knew God made him to do big things.

David took a slingshot and five small stones then went out to challenge the giant. So, there was Goliath, saying, “Nah, nah, nah, nah. Who’s going to challenge me?”

“Me!” David said. Goliath saw that he was just a boy! But remember, God was with David to help him do big things. So, David took out his slingshot and said, “Goliath! You may have all your big weapons, but God is WITH me!” Then David put one stone in the slingshot.

David used his sling shot to shoot the rock. It hit Goliath and knocked that big giant to the ground! Timber!

Wow! David did it. He saved God’s people from the mean giant. God made David to do a very BIG thing! And guess what? God made YOU to do big things, too!

Bible Paraphrase: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you. Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: God made me to do big things.

Family Devotional

So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. —1 Samuel 17:50

Our Bible story was about how David loved God and trusted that God would help him be strong and courageous. Do you remember the strong and courageous thing David did? David defeated BIG Goliath with just a sling and a stone. That was a really big thing to do, but David knew God made him to do big things, so he did it!

God made you to do big things, too. The Bible verse we’re learning will help you remember that you can be strong and courageous because God is always with you.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you. —Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

David was able to do the big things God made him to do because he loved God and trusted that God would go with him. That made David strong and courageous; strong and courageous enough to defeat BIG Goliath! So, with your family, make a list of big things you can do when you're strong and courageous because you know God is with you.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Thank You for making (name each family member). Help all of us trust that You are always with us so we can be strong and courageous enough to do the big things You made us to do. Big things like (read the list your family made). You are amazing, God, and we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
