David Chosen as King

1 Samuel 16:6-13

Our true story comes from the Bible. It is found in a part of the Bible called First Samuel (1 Samuel). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after a man named Samuel.

We begin with a man named Samuel.

God told Samuel that he would pick the next king! So Samuel went to a certain house because one of the brothers there would be the next king.

Now if you were looking for a king, you’d want someone really smart, right?

Or someone strong . . .

Or someone older with experience . . .

Samuel knew that choosing the next king was a big job. He also knew that God made him to do big things. He trusted that God would help him find the next king. So, Samuel looked at ALL seven of the brothers. But God didn’t choose any of them.

Samuel asked Jesse, the father of the house, if there were any more brothers.

Jesse said there was one more brother who wasn’t home, yet. “Send for him,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down until he comes.”

So, the brothers waited and waited and waited, until finally their brother, David, came home. But, David was just a kid! He’s so young. Do you think he can be the next king? God told Samuel that David should be the next king. Not because of the way David looked on the outside, but because of his heart on the inside. David loved God with all his heart, and that’s what God wanted for the new king.

Samuel listened to God and told David that God made him to do big things. God wanted him to be king when he was older! Wow! God chose David to be king and lead all the people! David would be in charge one day. He would be the next king. That is awesome. Samuel knew that God made him to do the big job of choosing the next king. And he knew God made David to be king and lead the people when he got older. God made us to do big things, too!

Bible Paraphrase: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you. Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: God has big things for us to do.

Family Devotional

Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
—1 Samuel 16:10-13

Our Bible story was about how God had BIG things for David to do. Do you remember what big thing God wanted David to do in our story? God chose David to be the next king! That’s a pretty big thing! God has big things for you to do, too.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you. —Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

David had no idea what big things God had for him to do when he was a young boy taking care of sheep. But now we know that God has big things for everyone to do. So, have the members of your family write down their name.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You are amazing! You made the whole world and everything in it, and that means You made (read the name of each family member). And not only did You make each of them, but You made them to do big things! I pray they will always look to You to know what to do. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
