Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz

Ruth 1-2

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible Ruth. And that part of the Bible is named after someone in our story.

We begin with a woman named Naomi.

Naomi was very sad because she didn’t have any family.

Naomi's husband and sons had died, and she was all alone. So, she decided to go back to the town where she grew up.

But she wasn’t really alone! Ruth was there. Ruth said, "I’ll go with you Naomi! I’ll be your family!" Wow! That’s amazing. God gave Naomi family to help her. Thank You, God.

So, Naomi and Ruth walked together all the way to the town where Naomi used to live.

When they got there, Naomi and Ruth were hungry. But they didn’t have any money to buy food. So, Ruth went to find something for them to eat.

Not far from where they lived, a man named Boaz had people working in his fields, gathering all the grain. Boaz was a distant relative of Naomi. His fields were like big gardens, and the workers worked very fast.

But as the people worked, they would leave grain on the ground behind them. Ruth saw this and began to pick up the grain from the ground to take it home to Naomi for food.

Boaz saw Ruth collecting food.

When he found out that she was family, Boaz wanted to help her and make sure she had lots of good food to pick from his garden. Isn’t that amazing? Wow! God sent family to help Ruth and Naomi. Thank You, God.

When Ruth went home with good food to eat, Naomi was so surprised and so thankful! What do you think she said? Yes! Thank You, God! Ruth and Naomi said thank you for the family God gave them to help them. All families look different. And all families can take care of each other! Thank You, God, for giving us our families. I can thank God for everything.

Bible Paraphrase: I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. Psalm 111:1, ESV

Text Truth: I can thank God for my family.

Family Devotional

Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
—Ruth 2:11-12

Our Bible story was about family. When Naomi’s husband and sons died, the only family she had was Ruth. Ruth stayed with Naomi and told her she would be her family. Naomi thanked God for Ruth. When Naomi and Ruth got back to Naomi’s home town, God added Boaz to their family! Naomi and Ruth were thankful for Boaz, and Boaz was thankful for Ruth and Naomi. They were all thankful for their family!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. —Psalm 111:1, ESV

Since Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz were thankful for each other, make a list, with your family, of family members you are thankful for. Each of you think of one person who you are thankful for.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Thank You for our families. Thank You for [family member's name]. Thank you for . . . (say each name written by your family). And thank You for giving us Jesus so we can be a part of Your family forever. You are amazing, God, and we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
