The Wise Men

Matthew 2:1-2, 9-11

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

This part of the true story of Christmas begins with wise men. "W" is for Wise Man. The wise men knew that God was going to send someone very special, and they wanted to see Him. One night, while the wise men waited, they saw a very special star in the sky.

When the wise men saw the special star, they knew they needed to follow it.

Walk, walk, walk. They kept looking at the star and following it. Walk, walk, walk . . . Finally, the wise men saw the star stop. So, they stopped.

The star had stopped over a house. Who do you think lived in that house? Jesus lived in that house! When the wise men saw Jesus, they knew He was the very special person they were looking for. They knew Jesus was the one God sent to show how much He loves everyone.

The wise men bowed down and worshipped Jesus and gave Him their very best gifts. Then they celebrated Jesus!

That is such an awesome part of the Christmas story! The wise men knew God gave us Jesus, and now we know God gave us Jesus, because He loves us so much!

Bible Paraphrase: God has given a son to us. Isaiah 9:6, NCV

Text Truth: The wise men come to see God’s Son.

Family Devotional

When they saw the star, they were filled with joy. The Wise Men went to the house. There they saw the child with his mother Mary. They bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures. They gave him gold, frankincense and myrrh.
—Matthew 2:10-11

Our Bible story was about some wise men. "W" is for Wise Men! The wise men followed a special star all the way to Jesus. It wasn’t Jesus’ birthday or Christmas time, but the wise men still wanted to celebrate Jesus, worship Him, and give Him gifts. They knew Jesus is very special. They knew that God gave us Jesus.

God has given a son to us. —Isaiah 9:6, NCV

Think about the present you would give Jesus if He had a birthday party. If you could give Jesus anything, what would you give Him? With your family, make a list of birthday presents you would give Jesus.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Jesus is the best gift EVER, because Jesus is the best friend EVER! If we could give Jesus birthday presents, we would give Him things like (read the list your family made). But we know what Jesus really wants is for us to be His friend and love Him the way He loves us. I pray every person here will do that one day. You’re the best, God, and we love You very much. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
