Woman at the Well

John 4:1-30

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

A long time ago, people would go to a well to get water. They didn’t have sinks or refrigerators or water bottles. If someone was thirsty, they had to go to a well for water!

And in this particular story, can you guess who was thirsty? Jesus! He had been walking a long way, and He was tired.

So Jesus sat down at a well. A woman came to the well to get water while Jesus sat there. The woman looked at Jesus and knew that they were from different towns. Jesus asked the woman, "Will you give me a drink?"

The woman was surprised Jesus asked her for water because she knew people from her town were not friends with people from His town. So the woman said, "Why are you asking me for a drink?"
Do you think that where she was from mattered to Jesus?

No, of course not! No matter where you live, Jesus wants to be your friend, and He loves you very much. Now let’s pretend that Jesus is having a party. If Jesus had a party, who do you think He would invite? Do you think people who live where it’s really, REALLY cold are invited to the party?

Yes! Of course, they’re invited. What about people who live where it’s really hot?

Yes! People who live where it’s really hot are invited to Jesus’ party. What about people who live in a tall building?

Yes! People who live in tall, tall buildings are invited, too. What about people who live in a small building like this?

Are people who live in small buildings invited to Jesus’ party? YES! No matter where you live, Jesus wants to be your friend. Jesus LOVES you. Everyone is invited to Jesus’ party because Jesus loves everyone.

Bible Paraphrase: Do everything in love.  1 Corinthians 16:14, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus loves people everywhere.

Family Devotional

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”
—John 4:7

No matter where you go, Jesus loves everyone. Who does Jesus love? Jesus loves everyone! That’s why Jesus was kind to the woman at the well and wanted to be her friend forever. And because Jesus loves everyone, everywhere, we can love everyone, everywhere, too. The Bible verse we’re learning will help us remember how to do that.

Do everything in love.  —1 Corinthians 16:14, NIV

With your family, make a list of different places. It can be any place because Jesus loves people everywhere!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to love people everywhere. Jesus loves people at the (read the list of places your family made), everywhere! Please help us love everyone the way Jesus loves everyone. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
